Press Reviews
Debbie Catalano in the 03.2002 issue Soundcheck Magazine writes:
Evoking images and emotions, guitarist/instrumentalist (he also plays keyboards, percussion, and theremin) Tony Savarino has compiled a multi-dimensional collection of songs that he titled Sound Track. Perhaps your first thought would be a soundtrack to a film and every song on this CD does sound like it belongs on the big screen alongside a visual and was, in fact, inspired by a film; however, upon absorbing these songs I also feel that perhaps it symbolizes a soundtrack of life. With the gamut of emotions that the music captures, each song is a reflection of aspects of life – from the bluesy sounds of “12” to the beautiful, spiritual feel of the mesmerizing “Here…” to the upbeat and twangy “The Porter” to even the slightly fragmented, almost disturbing “Voices,” Sound Track speaks volumes without uttering a lyric. Tony Savarino is truly a gifted guitarist and songwriter, for though the songs are diverse musically, they never lack for flow. He creates a voice for each song and expresses that voice through his guitar forming a distinct vibe for the songs. As a whole I found Sound Track utterly intriguing. My favorite songs were the stunning and dynamic “Symphonic,” which segued into “John Davis” – that was really more like an interlude before the electronica/techno feel of “Innocence.” I also found “Here…” captivating and absolutely loved the beguiling rock grooves of “Square” (which by the way feature SoundCheck’s own Jesse Mayer on drums – and Rich Cortese on bass – no wonder the grooves are ultra cool). Crossing genres doesn’t always work, but it does on this recording. Also, don’t be fooled by the fact that this is an instrumental by a guitarist – this CD is by all means atypical of a solo guitarist showcasing his adept rock guitar skills (though Tony does possess those fantastic skills) – in other words, this is not guitar poseur rock. Far from it. The guitar may be the centerpiece but there are a lot more things going on musically – piano, electronica, other-wordly vocal samples, and more. Enough talk…check this out yourself and get ready for a musical escape.
