Artist History
From the moment she burst upon the music scene, Meshell Ndegeocello has been acclaimed for her outspoken views on race and sexuality, and, most of all, for her matchless musical eloquence. Born Michelle Johnson in 1969, Meshell Ndegeocello spent the first five years of her life in Germany. After her family relocated to Virginia in the early 1970's, her father's side work as a jazz saxophonist provided her an invaluable introduction to music. As a teen, Meshell adopted the name Ndegeocello (Swahili for "free as a bird"), began playing bass guitar, and eventually became a fixture in the nightclubs of Washington, D.C. She captured the attention of a Maverick scout with an extraordinary improvised piece for bass, drum machine, and keyboard. She soon became the first female artist signed to Maverick. |
