    Artist History
Asylum was formed in February of 2001 with the intent to destroy and then revolutionize the pathetic current state of affairs that is today’s music. Long time band mates Jeff Hughell (Bass), Mike Blanchard (Drums), and Tyler Layne (Guitars) regrouped to collaborate on a totally new sound in metal but they needed a front man of exceptional vocal prowess and an undeniably commanding presence. The first person that came to mind was local madman Erik Andersen who was very well known in the scene for his “larger than life” vocal style and his even more powerful command over every crowd that stands before him. As the front man of several local acts Erik had played many past shows with earlier incarnations of what Asylum came to be and through this association a friendship blossomed. So let it be written that when it was time that the ultimate in metal bands was to be formed, it was crystal clear who was going to be the pioneers of this new sound. The intense sound of Asylum is grounded in Mike’s insane poly-rhythmic style of drumming that will have your jaw to the floor and leave your mind in a twisted state of euphoria. Mike’s rock solid groove in conjunction with his virtuosic percussive antics get your head bobbing which is when Jeff’s demonically woven & earth shattering bass lines come in to give Asylum its neck breaking hardcore musical motion. Bass players that are of Jeff’s caliber are rare and this is more apparent than ever when you are subjected to his deeply penetrating sub-sonic onslaught. The foundation is laid out and as tight as it gets when Tyler adds his aggressive and expressive symphonic madness that turns the suffering world of guitar on its ear. Tyler’s guitar manipulation relentlessly pounds through your skull and the resulting infectious rhythms that are produced by the band pull your body into a magnetic warp yet unknown to the collective masses. Erik’s refreshingly unique vocal approach is the final ingredient that makes this chemistry gel. He boasts a powerful and commanding vocal heaviness adding his own dynamic & expressive twist. Erik sucks you in with choruses that grow and infect under your skin and drive you mad with verses that refuse to cease running through your head. When Asylum hits the stage it is a display of sheer intensity that is undeniable. The members of Asylum execute their music almost flawlessly making it look way too easy as their presence commands you to go crazy! Asylum plays and quiet crowds with folded arms turn into screaming maniacs who cant keep still. The equation makes sense and success is inevitable. Asylum’s music has the potential to connect with so many people and on so many different levels. Once you let your mind go and submit yourself to the music it is clear that this not just another band and the only thing that stands in the way of Asylum’s pioneering sound blazing a huge trail in music history is time itself. May the music always speak for itself.
