If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
No phrase can better describe the formation of One Minute Halo. Though its members all came from the same background, growing up together in the metal-loving Dallas suburbs, members Jeromy Moorehead, Joey Catalano, Chris Downs, and Josh Preston have had an typical, although somewhat unusual, uprising in the music scene. They all played in a variety and mixture of groups until one day, it seems, fate stepped in and everything came together - that day, in 2001, One Minute Halo was formed.
Justin recollects, "The first time we got together, it was very workmanlike. We had a plan that was almost unspoken, and set about to immediately work on the best songs from all bands, and hitting the scene hard." "At the same time, it was so comfortable," adds Chris. "The same songs from our previous bands suddenly had more depth to them, more energy; while we were working, it didn't seem like work like it became in the old band. Making music was fun again."
The enthusiasm was contagious. Less than a month after their first rehearsals, the band debuted at The Galaxy club in the thriving Deep Ellum district of Dallas. Even their ex-band mates, still stinging from the break-ups, showed up and admitted that they did the right thing. One Minute Halo was on to something special.
A self-released EP sold over 4,000 copies, numbers unheard of for such a young band. This initial success was spearheaded thanks to the internet: One Minute Halo became a leading act on the influential MP3.com, recruiting thousands of fans one download at a time, and also was named a "Hot Band" by Street Wise Concepts and Culture (www.streetwise.com). The latter affiliation allowed the neophytic group to travel to the famous Whiskey in Los Angeles and House Of Blues in New Orleans for well-received concerts, in addition to various touring dates with such bands as Kittie, Dredg, One Side Zero, Filter, Nonpoint along with a date on Sevendust's "Locobazooka Tour"
The band's perfect meld of aggression and melody was attracting a lot of attention. It was not long before the buzz became too loud to ignore the five bandmates. Talent and ambition will only get you so far without a little luck, and Justin's love for the band Kittie set the table for the band's biggest break.
"I was a huge fan of Kittie, I even carried pictures of them around with me," Justin laughs. "Kittie was touring in the winter and they had six shows in Texas. I was out on Christmas break, so I followed the band around. I met them at the Houston show, and that was great, but by the end of their Texas run, Dave and Dee (Lander, Kittie's management and parents of members Morgan and Mercedes) remembered me from seeing me at all those shows and started to talk with me.
"I sent them demos and they liked what we were doing," he continues. "They started offering us some advice - at one point saving us from a very shady manager - until one day Dave just said to us, 'A record label would be crazy to not sign you guys! What do you think about us managing you?' Needless to say, we were thrilled!"
As much as having K.M.A. Entertainment in the band's corner has been instrumental in One Minute Halo's continued advancement, it is the band's unique, yet familiar sound that has turned the heads of hard rock fans wherever they have played. |

Press Reviews
From www.smother.net Dallas, Texas seems to be a breeding ground for heavier alternative rock, almost every year a new band from the area emerges on the national scene. This reviewer's bet on the next humungously popular group to arise from the Texas underground has got to be One Minute Halo. With a very likeable mainstream sound and some exceptional vocals, One Minute Halo are sure to find success in the near future. Incredible considering all the members are quite young, yet their talent is quite evident from one listen of their 2001 demo. Vocally, OMH are similar to some hybrid form of Papa Roach and Embodyment, plus additional growls that accent the album with moderate aggression. There are a few slight negatives, as occasionally One Minute Halo sound a bit too similar to other, more popular bands. Also, a few of their songs sound a bit alike, but otherwise these young men have firmly established themselves as a band to watch out for. The tribal beats that creep through Step Back could be abolished, as the sound doesn't quite feel natural for the group; it feels more like an effort to emulate their contemporaries. Regardless, this is one hell of a demo, and should turn quite a few label heads, as the band sure can create some fabulous radio-rock. One Minute Halo have a bright future that is just inches from their grasp, yet I am sure with songs like "Formulated" and "Blanket", this group are on the verge of tremendous fortune and fame.
