Artist History
In it's short history (1986-89), PYTHAGORAS confused and annoyed the people of Washington DC with live performances, both in clubs and outdoors. This included the legendary ALTERNATIVES FESTIVAL performance in Dupont Circle, featuring walls of feedback fr om modified toy guitars, acoustic sheet metal played with electric razors, tape-loops of gunfire, wolves, babies, etc. The silent "front man" was a full-body matted (and flea infested) Old English Sheepdog pelt, shaved just prior to the performance. The a udience consisted of an eclectic mix of DC punks (expecting typical hardcore), homeless people, and baffled pedestrians. PYTHAGORAS music was always improvised, recorded live direct to cassette, and never remixed or retouched afterwards. PYTHAGORAS play ed an extremely strange set at the fundraiser gig for the opening of the DC Arts Center in July 1989 (opening for a reggae band, how strange is that)... Following a pair of live improv collaborations with Lida Husik at the BBQ Iguana and DC Space, PYTHAGORAS finally dissolved. Pudgy went on to drum for Fidelity Jones, Hawkins formed BLUE SAUSAGE INFANT (still active today), and I'm not quite sure what happened to Charlie. He's out there, somewhere. Pudgy (alias Jerry) is now with the fantastic improv band ALL SCARS, with two albums on the Slowdime label. The only recorded output from PYTHAGORAS was a split cassette with Ha un ted Toilet released by Lethal Dose Musick, and a track on the cassette compilation ELECTRICITY, released by Megalomania. Additionally, a 60-minute cassette titled KNEE-DEEP IN THE GARDEN OF YOUR DREAMS was produced in very limited quantities, in 1989. I present the mu sic of PYTHAGORAS here as a historic marker of a time in DC when live music could still be an adventure, and "industrial" had not yet become the conceited, insipid, screaming-pretty-boy crap it is now... |
