Local Band Members Write
Official Webster Lake Song
By Karen Trainor
SouthBridge Evening News, June 1, 1999
Thank’s to the efforts of area band members, the lake that boasts the longest name in the country can now add an official song to it’s roster of distiction.
Lake Chagogoggmanchaugagoggchaubunagungamaugg (a.k.a. Webster Lake) was recently acclaimed in a signature song by the band Shades of Grey.
The group, comprised of members from Holland, Sturbridge, Webster , Dudley, and Connecticut, recently presented the song to the town of Webster at a public presentation attended by Webster sekectmen Jan Kujawski, Mark Dowgiewicz and a host of town officials and fans.
Holland band member Dave Bell, along with Steve Willey of Sturbridge, Darryl Peck of Dudley, and Rob Armstrong and Brian Konicki of Dudley and Woodstock,Conn., respectively, first performed the song in public last year. According to Bell, the ballad about the correct pronunciation of the famous lake skyrocketed in popularity, soon becoming the most requested song on a local Webster radio station.

Now known as the Chaubunagungamaugg Song, the official Webster Lake melody began as a rhyme Willey composed to help his four-year-old child say the name of the lake. When Shades of Grey spontaniously played it at a New Year’s party last year at Point Breeze in Webster, the song gained a sort of cult following, and eventually gained the attention of town officials and community groups in Webster.
“Soon we had interest from the school system . It wanted to use the song for promotion purposes. And the local football team the Webster Indians and the cheerleaders also wanted permission to use it,” Bell said.
It was then that the area band cut a record and decided to gift the town of Webster with the ballad, now declared the official town song.
“The Webster Lake song has really given the town a lot of recognition. We were glad to contribute it to Webster,” Bell said, adding “It is a great town.”
Bell, the owner of One Stop Towing in Brimfield, notes regional notoriety and fame is not new to his family. His brothers band, Belleview Cadillac received media attention when it declined to play at John F. Kennedy jr’s wedding reception several years ago. |
