Artist description
To a rising generation of music listeners intent on breaking down boundaries between musical genres, this one-word moniker is perhaps the closest approximation of Ringsend's curious amalgam of sound. The Richmond, Va. band fills the vast abyss left between the predictably trite and the overly-intellectualized. One might attempt a longer, more specific descriptor--jazz-inflected folk rock with some Celtic undertones, pop melodies with funk beats and a hint of electronica--but why complicate the issue? Thoughtful tunes that catch the ear. Appreciably complex, dancibly interesting. It's intelli-pop.
Through complex vocal arrangement and unique instrumentation, Ringsend paints an incomparable sonic landscape. Anthony employs a unique mix of acoustic and electric drums - a distinctive combination complimented by Chris Tully's use of various bass effects. Guitarist Chris Edwards favors his 1966 Guild hollow body electric guitar, producing a warm, jazzy tone, while Josh plays the part of the mad scientist - switching between four keyboards: a Clavinova piano, Hammond organ, Clavinet, and Moog synthesizer.
The result: Ringsend's infectious energy is channeled through the diversity of their music, a loud and clear expression of their mantra -- never underestimate the capabilities of the listener |

Artist History
Four years ago singer/guitarist Chris Edwards, a native of Birmingham, Ala., joined forces with pianist Josh "Knuckles" Harvey at Washington and Lee University in Harvey's hometown of Lexington, Va. Harvey was already well-established in his own right, having shared the stages with the likes of Agents of Good Roots (with the ubiquitous appearance alongside Dave Matthews), Chris Keup, and numerous others. In the musical dialogues that ensued, the two sought to strike a balance between overly-simplified pop rock and the difficult complexities of jazz. The songs that have emerged remain true to this philosophy, with works at once catchy to the musically uninitiated and interesting to the musician-listener. The project gained momentum with the addition of Chris Tully, a veteran bassist from New York, and solidified in the fall of 2000 witht the advent of Washington, D.C. drummer Anthony Allen.

Press Reviews
Lexington News-Gazette (10/17/01) "The musical arrangements and instrumental playing on this CD is far more ambitious, sophisticated and polished than practically any other debut performance by a band in recent years."
Longwood Rotunda (10/12/01) "Musically, Ringsend is a band impossible to nail down. Plan 9 would simply have to create a category under which to file this band for they defy any known label."
Richmond Times-Dispatch (9/27/01) "Ringsend's music - particularly the new CD's title track "Vertigo" - will inevitably draw comparisons with jam bands such as Phish and hometown colleagues Beaver Traffic Jam and Agents of Good Roots (Harvey often performs with Agents). |
