Vermifuge CD Review: Nightlife Magazine Vol. 20, No. 47(May 6-12, 2002 Issue)
By: Jaime Dombrowski
One Sick Lie's "Vermifuge" is five hardcore songs that are filled with gut-wretching screams and aggressive, pounding music. Deity (vocals), Eric Feldbauer (guitar and backing vocals), Kiel Bowles (guitar), Kevin Doughtery (bass), and Rocco Oliverio (percussion and backing vocals) have put together a raw, ear-splitting good listen.
"Drained of Beauty" is a dark and eerie tune that starts with one head bobbing beat, blends more melodic sound for the verses, then completely changes tempo for the gut-wretching screams of the chorus. "Fallen or Decay" played loud enough will make your wall vibrate. The aggressive Rage Against the Machine sounding guitar hook, combined with the pounding bass and drums makes me wish I didn't have neighbors. Although you can't understand any of the lyrics, the emotion of the song is conveyed in the heart stopping, shredding screeches, which offer up the question, "Can this guy even talk after the show?"
On "So Ugly" and "XOXO," One Sick Lie change their style a bit with more crunchiness in the music and less skrieking in the vocals. "So Ugly" is the simplest song on the disc, everything seems to be toned down a bit. "XOXO" has another catchy guitar hook, which gangs into a heavy, intense mosh-pit lovers fantasy song. Hard steady bass beats drive this song, which hits you hard enough to hurt! They threw in a love song, "Corpse," for the last track. They sound just as good in the studio, plus you get to hear some of the crowd reaction.
"Vermifuge" is full of the raw-hardcore sound that makes your teeth rattle and your ears ring. You can pick up "Vermifuge" at shows, or check out www.onesicklie.com for information."
