ARTIST: LYRICAL CLEANSING SONG: LOVE IT OR HATE IT F/ B-Y GENRE: HIP HOP / RAP SIMILAR: N/A -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Love Or Hate it By Lyrical Cleansing When I see Hip-Hop in my review queue, it isn’t uncommon for me to put my head in my hands and weep, as finding even passable tunes in this genre is very difficult, and bad Hip-Hop is no Hip-Hop at all. The usual tunes lack imagination, are badly constructed, and are without focus, or imagination, in fact, break all the rules of good musical production. This I am pleased to say is not the case here. Four Mc’s-: Synopsis Steezoh CP Sick B-Y Making up this tune under the heading of "Lyrical Cleansing", sharing the mike time amongst them, to create something that is not exactly original, but certainly has some fresh elements that are not present in a lot of what passes for Hip-Hop these days. First, the backing track is based around the ubiquitous drum beat for sure, this being a minor weakness in the track as it is only the one sample, and it for my tastes, is a bit metonymic. Lacking any variation, and as such, maybe another sample used intelligently, would have perhaps made the tune a notch or two higher on the scoring. That said, the tune is underpinned by a line built on a synth string section giving both a melody and bass contribution, very sweet, although again a bit repetitive but certainly putting an extra edge into the tune. The MC’s themselves, all four of them, are clearly well rehearsed and deliver the lyric with confidence and a high degree of skill. The lyric is easily understood; a definite plus for us white boys who actually want to hear what they are rapping about, so all in all a pretty professional piece of work all round. I just find it a pity that producers in this genre, seem not to have learned that imagination is the key to success, if you doubt me check the masters of this craft, Dr Dre, Tupac, Buster Rhymes, Snoop, all of whom rely on the beats to deliver the lyric, but include elements outside of that basic rule to raise the interest stakes. These MC’s are without doubt no worse than those with the gold discs in the quality of their vocal delivery, but fall short of the task by missing the point that the tune must contain more than just a voice and drum! If these guys were to get their heads round this, then I’m sure that they would be up there too! They have all the right ideas and the engineering skill to produce a good tune, listenable and concise, it’s just a question of imagination and creativity. Don’t misunderstand me, this tune is good and is worthy of a listen or two, and is way ahead of the normal tune presented for review in this genre. However without that extra element, it just falls short of being brilliant, but trust me it’s certainly on the right road.
