BIOGRAPHY: MARQUS P. BOBESICH
As the ex-vocalist of Toronto band Woodrow, this dynamic front man draws from his experience as an
actor, writer, painter, and stand-up comedian. Though he lists Sting, Counting Crows, and Jeff Buckley as
major musical influences, his energy and showmanship stem from an early infatuation with the 70's rock
group KISS.
When it comes to penning the words behind the music he cites more authors than vocalists for shaping his
bittersweet, introspective take on the world. A creative writing minor, his lyrics have been published as
poems in magazines across Canada. While pursuing his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at York University,
he received writing awards from Vandoo Newsmagazine, Foundation, and McLaughlin Fellows.
A drummer for nine years, he played regular shows with DAD, Flashback, Brave, and Toronto punk band
Spooky. He made the switch to vocalist in university after teaming up with Shane Anthony to form their
first group, Buster God. Months later, they changed the name to Woodrow, playing folk-houses, coffee
shops, and university pubs as an acoustic duo. In 1993, he received a Young Writers award from Books
In Canada for a poem that would later end up on Woodrow's first seven-song LP entitled "the couch
industry".
With the release of their debut CD "in brightness and beauty" (mixed by Juno-nominee Brad Nelson)
Woodrow was chosen as HMV Canada's Indie band of the month, which allowed them to perform live at
the HMV superstore in Toronto. After showcasing with The Gandharvas, the band received airplay at
campus radio stations across Canada, which was followed up by interviews and live-to-air acoustic sets.
1998 was the year of compilations, with his song "Surround" appearing on Q107's 'Homegrown 18'
CD, "Big Blue Sea" on a benefit CD for the International Fund for Animal Welfare, and "Hard Sympathy"
on ‘Rusted Roses', a fan-based tribute for musician Jeff Buckley.
An active participant in Toronto's literary scene, Marqus has self-published four collections of his
poetry/lyrics: Desert Lettuce (1992), Hire Fydrants & Stoopid Love (1994), The Night Of A Thousand
Snowsuits (1997), and An Obscene Joy...to Us Still (1999). He currently facilitates two writers' groups in
Toronto, with monthly readings to showcase up-and-coming artists. With training in the visual arts, he is
also responsible for the artwork and graphic design used for his recordings, posters, and promotional
material.
"Small Town Oceans" marks his debut release as a solo artist.
