Artist History
The sweet sound of Key, a mix of electric and acoustic rock guitars, infused with elements of hip-hop, reggae, and jazz, came together in the late 1990s. Key has steadily attracted attention and gained a following in the Kansas City area.
Key formed nearly four years ago when four high school friends got together in the Kansas City suburb of Olathe, Kan. Lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Andrew Bruns, lead guitarist Clay Britton, drummer and backup vocalist Tim Kohl and bassist Lee Wiglesworth began writing songs that would lead to the bands first live performance in October 1999. The following April the band recorded Random Thoughts, their self-released debut, and in 2000 self-released Live at Club 301. Other commitments caused Wigglesworth and the band to part; longtime band friend Kyle Babson became the bassist in early 2001.
In the past three years, the band has continued to add to its song library and gained valuable performing experience. Key has played at venues in the Kansas City area such as Above the Floor, Club 301 (formerly Gee Coffee), Club Illusion, the New Point Grille, Guacamole Grille, The Hurricane, Americas Pub, Mars Music and Borders Books.
The band has become a local favorite in Lawrence, Kan., making many appearances at the Bottleneck, Jazzhaus, Abe and Jakes Landing, The Granada, and the University of Kansas. Two of Keys performances at the Bottleneck were recorded by Lawrence cable TV channel 6, which lead to the band being featured on the local music program Fusion.
Armed with four solid new songs, Away, Rain, Fantasy and One Sweet Night, the band headed to the Airborne Audio studio in Lenexa, Kan., in the summer of 2001 to record what was planned to be a demo CD. Instead, the band released the four new songs along with a few older tunes in a compilation entitled Tracks. From that CD, One Sweet Night has gained some FM airtime in Kansas City.
When Key isnt busy performing or writing its own songs, it draws influence and inspiration from such well-known bands as the Dave Matthews Band, U2 and Sublime. Individually, each member draws from a varied musical background. Bruns has been singing all his life and has participated in various choirs throughout high school and college. Britton, a high school percussionist, has played guitar with two jazz groups. Babson showed his musical talents on the clarinet and bass clarinet before picking up the guitar and bass. Kohl played trumpet for six years before teaching himself how to play the drums, guitar and piano.
2003 has already been a very busy year for Key. In March the band added a fifth member. Matt Rice came on as the full time keyboard player and has added another element to the Key sound. In May Key entered the Chapman Recording Studios in Kansas City to record a new EP. The five song album will feature songs such as Sing and Celebrate and Mystery. The EP will be released in October on Rhombus Recordings.
As 2003 unfolds, the members of Key are looking forward to more song-writing and performing and expanding thier local following to the rest of the midwest. |
