Artist History
Dr. Kamal Purandare is a Hindustani vocalist of
the Jaipur Atrauli Gharana, and has been teaching
Hindustani Vocal Music for the past 35 years to
an entire generation of students in the
Hubli-Dharwad area of Karnataka, and has retired
recently as the Principal, and Head of the
Department of Music, SJMVS Women's College
Hubli, Karnataka.
She has performed on the stage from an early age,
and her first commercial recording was with HMV
at the age of 9. She has released a commercial
cassette, "Nijaguna Gana Chandra", and has
provided music direction for Sangeeta cassettes,
as well as Kannada songs for HMV. She has
performed in concerts conducted by AIR Dharwad
and the Karnataka Sangeet & Nritya Academy, as
well as private concerts all over India. She has
performed regularly on AIR Dharwad, for over 40
years, Hindustani Classical, and light music.
She is a member of the Karnataka Sangeeta & Nritya
Academy. She is concurrently serving as member of
an Expert Committee (Hindustani Music) in the
Ministry of Culture, Government of India, New Delhi.
She is on the program advisory board of AIR
Dharwad, as well as the Audition & Selection
Committees. She is a member of the board of
studies in music in Hampi and Gulbarga
Universities in Karnataka, India.
She has written and co-authored with her husband
Rajeev Purandare several books on music: Sangeeta
Kala Kusum, Raga Vibhoda, Raga Darshan, Bharatiya
Sangeeta Vadyagalu, published by Karnataka
University Press.
Dr. Purandare holds a PhD in Music, from Karnatak
University Dharwad, in addition to M.A (Music),
M.A (Kannada) and is currently guiding several
doctoral students at Karnatak University. She
studied music under several early tutors, briefly
with Nivritti Buwa Sarnaik, and finally with her
husband Rajeev Purandare, himself a student of
Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur.
