Artist History
Not much is known about the beginings of Honest Ben Jonson. The most anyone can remember is searching for drummers. The first drummer was a machine, and we would generally play badly to a mechanized beat. Then we enlisted the help of one of the few people we knew who had a drum set. He then proceeded to invite a set of twins, who also played drums. That practice can best be described as a circus. The owner of the drum set, the set of twins, some other girl, and some guy who was playing Metallica riffs were in the practise room, while Adam, Ho Ying and Jordan stood in the hall. We're not sure if we had a singer at that point. Somewhere down the line someone tapped Jay to be the drummer. We had a female lead singer, and she never sang. Jay then became the singer by default.
We played covers for the fall, winter, and spring. Weezer, Radiohead, Foo Fighters, and Fountains of Wayne. Early in June we got our first big break, Gay Day. It was a collection of bands from stuy. HBJ went on third, and played a fine set of covers (Denise and Leave The Biker - FoW, The Bends - Radiohead, Popular - Nada Surf, Philosophy - BF5), and one original song, known only as "Jay's Song". It was also at Gay Day we got our first fans, who taught us the rock'n'roll hand shake.
Later that June we didn't play another show, and if anyone says they saw us on a pier, or Ho Ying was holding a lead pipe, they are a damn liar.
We took much of July off, and recorded Grand Fortune in 3 weeks of August, which 3 weeks we're not sure. All the songs from Grand Fortune are featured at mp3.com, with the exception of 2 tracks. We covered Possum Kingdom by the Toadies, and Exhausted by the Foo Fighters. |
