the mobeus: Plasm 604/Klangers/Lightship
(Filterless)
Assuming I've got these unlabelled tracks the right way round, 'Plasm 604' is a mental squelchy acidic trance with loadsa build ups and percusion - love it. 'Klangers' is slightly calmer melodic number, and 'Light Ship' also more downbeat, but darker and spookier. Good Package.

The Moebius is, of course, famous to anyone who bought the first Orbital album, where it is explained by Captain Spock that, "there is the theory of The Moebius, a twist in the fabric of space, where time becomes a loop." As an explanation of the hypnotic nature of techno, the Moebius Theory is intriguing. Basically, if you take a strip of paper, twist it, then glue the ends together, you can draw a line starting on one side of the paper which will continue on around that strip until it reaches itself. Cutting along the line will give you not two loops as you would expect, but one big loop.
The Mobeus have adopted their own spelling and developed their own sound, taking inspiration in equal measure from Orbital and the Moebius Theory, to turn out an extremely well-recorded album of six tracks: hypnotic, melodic techno trance, where thanks to the Moebius theory, a simple thing like a bass loop never actually sounds the same twice.
If you like Orbital, then you'll love The Mobeus. Not too many people out there are brave enough to attempt the sort of trancey techno which the brothers Hartnoll have stomped out as their own, perhaps for fear of sounding too derivative. The Mobeus have no fear of sounding derivative, simply because they aren't. Although the influence of Orbital is there, so are a thousand others, from Derrick May to Black Dog.
'Hard trance with melodic lines' is how The Mobeus describe their music, and this is as good a label as any. Goan Trance is the current buzzword for this energetic rush of techno, with Juno Reactor the flavour of the month. I was privileged enough to see the latter band live in Amsterdam recently, and listening to The Mobeus leaves me in no doubt that Martin and Pascal will soon be up with the brothers in trance, poised on the edge of their own visual reality.
