Artist History
Trial by fire:
Whitey Gomez played their
very first public show to
nearly 800 rabid Old 97's
fans. "Nobody knew who we were,"
says drummer Peter Craft, "and
(lead singer) Scout kind of mumbled our name.
"Halfway through the set people were
yelling ‘Who are you?’ I guess it was
a good sign that they wanted to
know." Since that first show in 1998,
more and more people are asking
about Whitey Gomez--the name has
become less like a mumble and more
like a buzz. The band's been invited to play clubs
across San Francisco, including gigs at the
Bottom of the Hill's Sunday Barbecue -- a
weekly SF tradition -- and Slim's, where they
recently won a coveted slot opening for
BR5-49. In the coming weeks they'll be
sharing stages with acts like The Gourds,
Jack Logan, The Backsliders, and Robbie
Fulks. |
