Artist History
South of Houston hails from San Diego, California, where the weather is nice but the music scene isn’t. Everyone here is into the Dj thing. Which is cool I guess, if you want to pop a bean, stay up all night and chew on your cheek. But that’s not what these three guys are all about. You see, this band is about dive bars and good music. Their sound is fresh, consisting of heavy indi rock with mass appeal. Corey plays guitar and sings. Andrew plays bass and backs Corey on the mic, and Troy lays down the fresh beats on drums.
South of Houston’s first album, Live and Learn, was produced by Michael James (Whole, Reverend Horton Heat, Pitchfork) at Westlake Audio in Hollywood, California. Within weeks of its release, this album broke the band into the Southern California music scene. On MP3.com, the band experienced heavy activity: 10,000+ downloads which kept them at #1 in there genre for months. In San Diego, a college video shot for the first track “Hold Me Under” won its directors Ron Najor and Tyler Spangler an Emmy. Furthermore, interest generated by the album gave the band opening slots for national acts. And,took them to best of the year at the Belly Up Tavern. There second album is a self-titled single consisting of three heavier tunes, “You Bring Me Down,” “Yeah Yeah Yeah,” and “What Does it Take.” Sick ass guitar riffs with fresh bass and drums, give seasoning to the vocals which push the latest material over the top. Furthermore, the band has begun getting air play on Loudspeaker, a local radio show. And crowd turnout for shows has grown substantially. South of Houston is currently touring there current single on the west coast.
Reflecting on their accomplishments made so far, South of Houston has been molded by its success and failures. There music is showing the depth of each member’s frustration and enjoyment of playing music. As a result, the next album is a release of these tensions. And that’s what their music is going to be about, heavy indi-rock with popular appeal. Songs off the next album like “Falling out of Depression” and “Everyone Around Here” are sure to gain the band national recognition.
Insightfully, South of Houston has shaped its sound into an aggressive, indi rock that represents more of a lifestyle of living off stale nuts and beer at your local dive than the overproduction of life heard on the radio today. The next album will set new standards of performance by artists rather than production.
The signature sound South of Houston is creating is good enough to make your ears bleed so check their web site frequently for tour information, song release dates, and web broadcasts.
