Artist description
An artist's work is planted and grows in the
earth of continual experiences, from birth
onward. Planted in my personal soil are three
main roots from which the work springs:
1) traditional flamenco,
2) that spectrum of jazz that journalists call
free jazz improvisation and
3) certain techniques of contemporary classical
composition. My pieces each have a composed
foundation and/or a traditional flamenco palo
(form), but development, departure,
interpretation can all be spontaneously derived
- i.e. improvised - during each performance
I feel very strong musical and spiritual links
between the most ancient traditional flamenco
and the most modern Jazz improvisation. It is in
finding the intersections of these traditions,
exploring the possibilities of where and how they
meet and interact - while remaining honest and
respectful to them both - that forms the basis
of my work

Artist History
Around 1850, when the flamenco guitar and the
singer got together in the cafes cantantes and
the cante became a spectacle (a fiesta, rather
than a private party ... juerga), three concepts
of the flamenco guitar emerged. The first was
the idea of the humble guitarist as accompanist
(the true flamenco, guitarist, in the ideal sense). The second concept was that the guitar was as significant as the cante. The third was the concept of the flamenco guitar as a solo concert instrument. The music of Roberto Pablo is best described as a solo concert instrumental. While many other players of this Genre prefer to play along to pre-recorded MIDI backup music, Roberto prefers to keep his music pure by not relying on artificial computer backup music.
Roberto has been playing the guitar since 1975. He grew up in New York, and after initial studying of electric guitar, found a 40 year old vintage Martin classical guitar that his mother had played. He was fortunate enough to see a performance of Carlos Montoya, the legendary Flamenco player and Pioneer. Carlos Montoya lived in the same town in New York at this time. He also got to meet Carlos and his interpreter, dancer, manager, wife. Later he got to see Paco Delucia and was truly inspired.
For the last 22 years, Roberto has perfected his own style of nylon guitar Flamenco jazz as evidenced in his recent CD, Spanish rose. This CD has been a big seller recently on www.mp3.com/robertopablo. While Roberto prefers to play all original compositions, he can also do renditions of current Flamenco hits such as "El Camino" by the Gypsy Kings and others.
Roberto has played around the South Florida area
for the last ten years playing, mostly through
agents but also can be found playing clubs and
coffee houses such as Borders, Liberties, etc.
Roberto is an extremely accomplished and
professional entertainer.
