Artist description The Orange Project was founded in 1963 by two art school students with a thirst for something different.Their style would later influence the Krautrock movement, among other avant-gardists, such as John Cage and The Velvet Underground. A classic story among band members is that of when Lou Reed showed up to one of their gigs and began using Julian Indica's innovative guitar feedback tricks years later, in his band, The Velvet Underground. After playing at many of John Cage's "Happenings", doing all acoustic sets, in which they used bricks, tape recorders, and water buckets, to impress a crowd of bored hipsters. They also severely affected the Fluxus Movement, co-creating many ofNam June Paik's television sculptures. At that point, the band broke up, thus causing to be forgotten by music textbooks everywhere. Julian Indica went to find himselfin Brazil, while Matt Orange moved to suburban Pittsburgh with his wife, Angel. This does not mean they stopped working with music, however. Julian had just collaborated with many musicians, such as Burt Bacharach, Ornette Coleman, and even worked with artist Chuck Close on an installation piece. Matt was recording 4-track soul demos, with songs about astrology and sex, and was working in a post office.Then, Julian and Matt ran into each other at a Buddhist Monastery, of which they were both invited by Allen Ginsberg. They quickly began discussing musical ideas, since Matt was currently working with reissuing Conlon Nancarrow's complete piano works, and Julian wasassisting David Byrne in the production of an Os Mutantes album. They have reunited, and along with the resurfacing of old tapes + new material, The Orange Project has come back to take it's place as one of the most influential bands in history.
