Press Reviews
THE OREGONIAN Sept. 11, 1998: Fatman, A wide load of funky sound: In some circles, nothing is funkier than a fat man.Or more precisely, "Fatman"- the funk / hip-hop / R&B / soul / groove combo storming onto Portland club stages. And with a roster of 15 members, the storm should be upgraded to hurricane status soon. Keyboardist Niall - first names only please, for security purposes - describes the idea behind Fatmanas "taking the best of what we could do as musicians and performers and put into one act. Music, acting, audience participation, costume changes, dancers, everything you'd want to see in a show. "We came up with a story line, wrote 10 songs to fill it out and started to play shows to finance the big production," he says. For the time being, Fatman isn't tipping its hand about the big production, a planned monster stage show and musical revue the band refers to as as beingon the scale of The Who's "Tommy." Each set they perform contains a few numbers from the big production, some unrelated nuggets and improvisational breaks The story - still under construction - is gathered loosely around the bands origins. "It's about how we were gathered together and giventhe funk to go" says guitarist Luis. "There's a character who's the master of the funk, who bestows it on us." "That's me!" singer J.R. Pella says. "Except I come over like Wayland Flowers and Madam. Like the Rip Taylor of rock." Pella, former front man for Portland rock band, Drunk At Abi's, is the embodiment of the blue eyed soul singer. With a bent for wicked, self deprecating humor and a disarmingly mild exterior--think Charlie Brown gone slightly to seed-- Pella is positively possessed onstage, his gravelly voice giving shape and form to the funky vibrations buried within his generous frame. Fatman has been in the formative stages for two years, with the band starting to play out live since December of last year. The lengthy incubation period is excused by the time it takes to assemble 15-odd players--singers, percussionists, a full complement of horns and a DJ to spin records. Niall discusses what every member brings to the table, saying, "Everyone has contributions to make. In a set we'll do funk, hip-hop, soul. We can toss out a dub reggae tune if we feel like it. There are a lot of influences, but we try and assimilate it all and still maintain a common thread." Saturday night's show will be in support/financial, spiritual and otherwise-- for filmmmaker/fanzine publisher and friend of Fatman, David Walker. Walker had been "Macked, Hammered, Slaughtered and Shafted" and now he's trying to figure out how to pay for the completion of his film of the same nome. a documentary about the Blaxploitation film genre of the '60's and 70's. "Macked..."--in Walker's words--is a serious attempt to document a cinematic oddity that most film scholars don't take seriously. These were movies that spoke directly to a different breed of African American, the post-Civil Rights-era generation. These movies gave us heroes who could fight and stand up to the man. "They had a profound effect on the Hollywood of their time, too. You can laugh at somebody making a film like, 'Blacula', but it made a lot of money." While the shooting of the documentary is done--including indepth interviews with Blaxploitation stars of the day like Rudy Ray Moore (Dolemite) and Jim Kelly (Black Belt Jones)-- and partially edited, Walker is still raising funds to pay for the licensing of the film clips he's used to illustrate his movie. Of course, how much of the considerable sum needed to finish the documentary will get raised at $5 a head is questionable. But then, so is how many members of Fatman will fit onto the Jasmine Tree's minusscule stage. |
