Artist History
It's difficult to describe the work of Matt Cheplic. That's because he excels at such a variety of work. He's a singer, a guitarist, a songwriter, a bassist, a producer, a journalist, a saxophone player, a scholar, a pianist, a poet ... he can leap tall buildings in a single bound, and he eats all his vegetables. Hailing from the musically fertile scene of Hoboken, NJ, Matt was one of the first acts signed to Bodyguard Records, impressing the label with his smart, tightly structured compositions. Matt's songs recall English pop masters like The Beatles and Elvis Costello with appealing melodies cradled by imaginative arrangements. But his rich baritone voice and cool delivery reveal a soulful side which definitely takes its cue from this side of the Atlantic.
Matt's songs also strike a chord with their clever, subtle lyrics. As Matt puts it: "Melody and rhythm are important for their sweet taste, but you need intelligent lyrics to get all your vitamins and minerals." When Matt isn't honing his craft on the road or in the studio, he flexes his writing muscles by contributing to various entertainment and technology publications. Recently, Matt pulled off an amazing feat when his video for "Deliver Me" found its way onto MTV. Selected as part of a profile of independent artists, "Deliver Me" has been subsequently played numerous times on the network, making it one of the few truly indie videos on the MTV airwaves.
