Destroy Miranda: A Step in Natural Selection
Lola Records
8 out of 10
2002
These days it seems like more and more bands are picking things up and moving from the East Coast or Midwest to call sunny San Diego their new home. Destroy Miranda is the latest addition to that list of growing bands. Originally from Arizona, DM moved to SD in 2001 and A Step in Natural Selection is their first release as San Diegans.
Aggressive, yet not hardcore, Destroy Miranda conjures images of Hot Water Music and Fugazi. They play that style of indie rock that's hard enough to get you up and moving, yet soft enough that it won't hurt your ears listening to it. What really impresses me about this album is the bass work. In many of the songs the guitar will take a back seat as bassist Aarik Miller lays out solid, flowing bass lines that set the mood for the entire song. That's not to say the guitars are not captivating; on the contrary, there are intricate intros and well placed leads and solos. And both guitarists feed well off of each other as well to create a noisy, yet well-balanced sound that seems to complement the deliberate drumming and adjusts to match the vocals whether screaming, throaty, or whispering.
Destroy Miranda is one of those bands that you can't listen to without getting that urge to bust out the CD booklet and start reading the lyrics. Their live show is amazing, but even when listening on CD you become engulfed in the pure rage of the music, and feel compelled to know exactly what it is that has gotten these four guys so worked up. The lyrics are the final piece of the puzzle for the band, completing their somewhat dark sound. The different vocal styles portray hope and despair, as the band sings of important issues facing our society in such a way that the listener is fully aware of their importance, but still doesn't feel like they're being preached at. You can definitely expect more good things coming from this bunch of San Diego transplants in the upcoming years.
