    Press Reviews
www.metalireland.com Mabus666: "Profit" demo Ireland's Mabus (now with added 666 appeal) are a band I have heard much about, but little by way of actual material. It was with interest then that I received this demo in the post. Cork is definitely home to some of the most extreme metal in the country with bands such as Belinus, Carnun Rising and Demogorgon, so its no surprise that such a filthy piece of underground muzik should hail from there. Being a demo this is fairly rough and ready in the production stakes, sounding on many occasions home made, and probably does fall below the standard of most demos these days. I doubt that troubles the band one bit however, as the nihilistic blackened metal herein would hardly lend itself to a nice shrink wrapped production job anyway. Several bases are touched upon; mainly, as stated, a dirty and raw black metal derivative with hints toward Impaled Nazarene on occasion, and some Carpathian Forest. Melodic sections do appear, such as the main lick of "Thy Will Undone", which could have been inspired by early Paradise Lost - it sticks in the head the same way. The whole thing succeeds through a combination of grim riffs that possess quite some weight (opening of "Seed of Power") and a generally loathsome, fetid atmosphere. The main detracting point that really held me back from liking this alot more was the shouted vocals which are simply out of key sometimes. If the band had also spent maybe a bit more time on tidying their arrangements it would have added alot - the start of "Shadows Cast" betrays just a little too much sloppiness. There is quality in here, and much potential - it is very rough however, in all aspects. Good, but buy with caution - its probably best for fans of that seedy lo fi subgenre of the black fraternity. 2.9 / 5. -Ciaran Tracey ::: 05/08/02
