Artist description
History : Nick Doyle was born in Campile Wexford, and came to England in the 30's. They lived in Sparkbrook and had 7 living children. One of which is my father Jimmy.
Nick played melodeon, fiddle and harmonica, in the 40's and 50's, progressing to a Hohner Melodeon during the 50's to the early 70's. From what my father remembers, he used to play mainly solo, and intersperse dance tunes with song tune sets, in the pubs around Sparkbrook and Digbeth.
From what my Nan said when she gave me the tape recorder and tape, he had found it difficult to operate, although, listening to the tape, he was doing quite well, till someone came along to "advise him".
The recording consists of 2 sides of 20min tape. Side 1 is Melodeon, Side 2 is a Irish dance music record selection, tunes such as Masons apron, Harvest home, Miss McClouds etc. by various artists.

I couldn't listen to the tape for about 20 years as I didn't have access to a Reel to Reel. I finally got it transfered to tape about 5 years ago. By then I had been playing fiddle for 10 years. Mostly from an Irish player called Bernard, who plays at the Salutation, in Manchester. He is from Clare, but has a similar "Old Time" style, and plays all the tunes on the tape.
Since I moved to Diggle 12 years ago, I have studied the traditional music of the area, from books published from old manuscript. I even did one myself from the "Ellis Knowles" manuscript..
