Artist History
In 1998 SetAside was founded by Roel and Bart, sharing their love for music. We continued the band together after we had been playing with Sander, from the Rotterdam-based band Cry Out Despair, on drums. Due to limited time, Sander had to leave the band. The regrets he must have...(hi there, buddy!)
The first real line up consisted of Ton (vocals), Rick (drums), Roel (bass) and Menno and Bart (guitars). We started rehearsing at dB's in Utrecht, the Netherlands, not really playing a particular style of hardcore. Progressively the music evolved into something like fast 80's HC mixed with some metal, trying to please the thrashers aswell as the moshers. Our influences are widely spread from Where fear and weapons meet, Face to Face, Battery, H20, Rykers to Caliban, Walls of Jericho and Purusam (i guess, haha). After a few months Joeri took over the vocals from Ton. Ton, thanx a lot for your friendship and everthing you did for us!!
The lyrics are tried to be kept positive since we firstly all don't feel comfortable with a tough-guy image and secondly don't believe in putting things down without coming up with a positive solution. We tried to spread this positive message not only through words but also through our shows. We like to have fun with the audience and our friends. We can't be grateful enough to those picking up those vibes! Thanx!
Late '99 we recorded our first demo at Dé Studio in Asse, Belgium, where Dirk Miers did a great job making up for our lousy equipment we used at the time. The sound quality is quite ok. The demo was put on CD just after Joeri and Bart had seperately spent 6 months abroad. We wanted to help a good cause with our demo-sales, so we decided to charge fl.2,50 extra which will go to Warchild.
Last november we recorded 3 songs for a 7 inch with Foreclosure at the Paul Francois studios in Tilburg. This was released in March 2001. The reactions we
had so far were very positive.

DEMO
REFLECTIONS MAGAZINE, ISSUE #14 SPRING 2001
Even though this is a demo, the CD looks really professional and you can tell they put some work in it. The music is pretty standard old-school hardcore. The lyrics aren’t all that cliché and that’s a positive thing (actually: this whole band is about positivity). Some good and original parts (“No Regrets”) prove that we can expect more from them in the future! (JP)
MY OWN WAY 10-10-2000
Already recorded in December last year, but finally released! Well, reading the title of this demo it has got to be a more 'fun' hardcore band (knowing some of the band members, this is true!). Musically these guys remind me of fast-paced eighties hardcore with great mosh parts and back-up vocals. The lyrics are typically hardcore, not that there's anything wrong with that, but there's nothing I can write about them? The singers' accent is a bit too 'Dutch', so they've sent him to an English speaking country to scratch up his English. The sound quality is very good for a demo, it's recorded at De Studio in Asse, Belgium. (…)

7INCH
MAXIMUM ROCK'N'ROLL, July 2001
Set aside bust out with some really fast straightedge hardcore. The music was strong and charging, though the vocalist has a shrill scream that reminded me of the singer from Brother's Keeper. Foreclosure takes things in a totally opposite direction that alternates between mid-paced choppy emo and blazing fast harcore. They actually pull it off with style. A strong DIY release (..)
ROCK-E-ZINE.COM, spring 2001
Both Foreclosure and Set Aside have been playing a lot of shows in Holland lately. and they wanted to put a crown on their hard work by releasing a split 7inch. No demo's, no recordlabels, no nuthin, just D.I.Y.! With D.I.Y. productions, you might fear the for quality of the end result, but the bands really did put a crown on their work! This 7inch is high quality stuff! And I haven't even started on the music yet! The music just grabs you!
Foreclosure plays new school: Laid back parts that are combined with hard hitting straight forward hardcore! The screaming vocals make their style complete. And quite unique as well. Comparing to any band is hard, but the name Darwin comes to mind. Foreclosure have been able to direct their live energy straight in this 7inch and listening to it makes me wanna visit one of their shows again.
Set Aside play old school: Fast, aggressive, energetic and never, ever boring! They remind me a lot of Where Fear And Weapons Meet, due to the vocals by Joeri and the straight forward old school hardcore, with some great breakdowns! Being able to compare them with the likes of a band as Where Fear And Weapon Meet is proof of the band's abilities. My guess is, that both Set Aside and Foreclosure will be getting more and more attention from the Dutch Hardcore scene. And let's face it: after a great production like this, they deserve it!
This 7inch is loaded with love for Hardcore. It also shows us that old and new school can easily go hand in hand. This creates a mood around it, that increases the joy of listening to it. I have been thinking, which songs I should recommend to you, but to be completely honest: I higly recommend all! All six songs, three for each band, are of an equally high standard. It isn't one specific song that rises above the rest of the songs, it's the entire release, that rises above most of the releases I have come across lately! Rating: 9 out of 10

I never heard material from these two Dutch bands before, so I was very eager to listen to them for the first time. Both bands play 3 songs on this split and if I have to describe a style I find it hard to say. In their booklet they say that they don't want to be labeled OldSchool or NewSchool, but I do it anyway. I would say they are both more OldSchool orientated but never miss a touch of NewSchool. Set Aside play a more straight sound with a cool high-pitched voice while Foreclosure brings in some chaotic moments as well. I really like these songs although there is a lack concerning sound quality, but I'm not so much bothered by that so much (…)
