Artist description
Borrowing from the dancefloor and exhibiting a club friendly sensibility, this pop music is on another level entirely. Breathy vocals mix with danceable beats, but there is a strangeness to it all that is difficult to explain and yet gives the music a vaguely askew angle from the listeners point of view. Artist History
Hook the captain breathes new life into the juxtaposition between the electronic and pop genres. Fusing elements of trance and pop, the captain works tirelessly to create a powerful blend of sleek sounds that are both underground and accessible. From the stylistic downtempo lo-fi beats and ghostly electronic soundscapes of "take me away," to the darker unstoppable house grooves of "temple," The captain has a sound all his own. Drawing on a love for warm ambient sounds, dope disco beats, and tweaked out human voices, there is little question why this master of the hook is topping the Washington D.C. charts this month.
A do-it yourself rock star, pounding out hits from his one bedroom apartment/recording studio,(Running In Space) the Captain lives, eats and sleeps, on the Underground Pulse.
A rising force in the progressive underground, Hook started his musical career immediately after spending 9 months playing Internet computer games and never leaving his house. At the time his act consisted of playing electronic music with sequencers, drum machines, and keyboards on St. Louis County buses in Missouri. Even though he has abandoned such gimmicks, a touch of absurdity remains in every facet of the captain's stylized persona. From the web site, to the phony fan sites, one recurring slogan, says it all: "Hook. He's the Pants."™ Hook remains ever faithful to the music. He works assiduously to create a powerful blend of unstoppable lo-fi grooves and splendid vocals. His lyrics inevitably evoke emotions universally kept just beneath the surface of the human soul. So will we all fall subject to the Hook.
Keep an eye out for Temple, and Reach on Climax Records this year. They are being released under the captains UK alias J-punch, for which he has been acclaimed in MUZIK magazine by DJ superstar James Zabiela as a producer of one of the top ten tracks of 2002. Promos of these dark and dirty tribal / tech-house tunes are currently enjoying plays by John Digweed on Kiss FM, Sander Kleinenberg and other high profile DJs like Zabiela(who put the track at #6 on his chart in Muzik Magazine last month), and other High profile DJ’s from Balance Promote US, Renaissance, Yoshitoshi, Choo Choo Records, and beyond. DJ and Producer Moussa Clarke, often associated with Ministry of Sound, will be releasing"Liquid Heart" a powerful depeche mode-like pop tune in the coming months on his UK based label OvenReady Productions with a dope remix for the flipside by Gray Area of Chicago who recently signed to Hope Recordings.
The captain has produced a number of short tracks for various film projects including one for David Segal, Pop critic for the Washington Post, and others for MTV, and Multiple Big Budget Indie Films. Segal himself says Hook is, "the pants," and recently wrote an article featuring the captain and local crew Deep Dish in the Post's own Sunday Magazine on November 3, 2002.
Recent Accolades include being in the spotlight on the forefront of the multimillion user Kazaa Network. Kazaa is the world's largest peer to peer software sharing service. From over 12,000 artists he was chosen not only to be featured on the front page of this 100 million user Network, but his track "Temple," was actually used for the DEMO of the entire program being showcased to millions. When interviewed by the New York Times, about Popular Artists Bjork’s Potential concerns regarding his music being associated on the Kazaa Network’s Search engine with her Artist name, the captain told the times essentially that “I don’t think she will mind, because my music is so awesome. If my music wasn’t so awesome, she might care, but since it IS so awesome, I think she will like it, if she were to, say read this.”(paraphrased)
According to David Segal, the Washington Post’s pop critic, Popular DJ Duo Deep Dish, winner of a grammy this year, took an interest in the tune which has been tearing up the digital domain. “Is this guy signed,” they said?
Recent live performances included opening for Rusted Root and Mike Doughty of Soul Coughing in D.C. in a 2500 person venue at Catholic University on the 2002 Volkswagon/Clear Channel College Tour. The Captain has also been offered several residencies in the DC area since the recent shutdown of Buzz.
Historically, the captain has been featured on the front page of the prestigious DC City Newspaper Arts Section. He can constantly be found schmoozing with the local DJ's, degarmenting the local ladies, and every once and a while writing reviews for various magazines that have included BPM Culture Magazine, DJmixed.com.
A full length US album, "BANG TO THIS" is scheduled to be released within the U.S. sometime this year.
Stay tuned for more info.
