Artist description
Dragon Fountain is a heavy, riff-oriented rock ‘n’ roll band from Orange County, CA. More specifically from the Newport Beach / Costa Mesa area. Orange County has always had an important influence on music especially punk rock and that punk rock affected all of us. All the members of Dragon Fountain were raised on a combination of influences ranging from the classic rockers Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, The Who and Alice Cooper to The Damned, Killing Joke, Iggy Pop, the Dead Kennedys and so on. Later influences such as Alice in Chains, Tool, Soundgarden, the Melvins and Helmet helped define our music. What does all this mean? We don’t know either.
Dragon Fountain is now a four-piece band consisting of drums, bass, lead guitar and rhythm guitar combined with vocals from every member. The current line-up is Jim DeLozier Lead Vocals and Rhythm Guitar; George Kent Lead Guitar and Vocals; Steve Monroe Drums and Vocals; Jim Williams Bass Guitar and Vocals. Originally, the band was a power trio with guitar, bass and drums with each member doing lead vocals. The band started with George Kent (guitar) and Steve Monroe (drums) jamming together. George ran into Jim DeLozier (bass), who he had known since childhood, and asked him if he'd like to play with them. At their first meeting Jim and Steve hit it off very well and found they had been in the same circle for years without actually being introduced. That night at “practice” Jim was pleasantly surprised by the heavy music they were working on and he was immediately hooked. This was in the spring of 1999.
From that early beginning the three of us worked together on every song collaborating on each part. We encouraged one another to help influence each other by allowing input on each instrument and songwriting. We soon had an understanding amongst each other that we were a team and not a group of individuals. For the first time Steve was invited to contribute with lyrics, singing and most importantly songwriting. We all worked together to create every song. Sometimes the changes were slight but more often the changes were dynamic. Each of us contributed musical parts to each song and co-wrote some of the lyrics.
On the first demo, recorded in October 1999, we did six songs. George did lead vocals on two songs: Sidewinder and Cloning Device. Steve did lead vocals on two songs: Flesh and Walk Away. Lastly, Jim did lead vocals on two songs: Naked With You and In God’s Name. In this period we were trying to decide on a name and the two choices were THICK and F8. We had tentatively been going by Thick. We elected to use F8 and came to find out a year later that F8 had been used many years earlier by a dance band so we quickly changed back to THICK.
We returned to the same studio, DoubleTime in El Cajon, CA., almost a year later after playing some shows and writing new material. We had cut three of the old songs out of our live set and added six new songs. We decided to re-record the three songs we were keeping in our new tuning and record all six of the new songs with Steve continuing his vocals and Jim continuing his. George decided to concentrate more on guitar and stopped doing lead vocals. We re-recorded Flesh, In God’s Name and Walk Away. We added Dharma Singh; I’m Alive, Super Evil, Heroin, Liar and Reality. With our new set and our new 9 song recording entitled “Three Piece Meal” we went back out and started doing shows again.
In early 2001 we made the transition from a three-piece to a four-piece band. We searched high and low for a bass player we all liked and had some trouble finding someone. We had decided to make the change with Jim moving over to rhythm guitar to be able to concentrate more on vocals.
Just as this was happening we came across another band named Thick. Again, we were faced with a name change. We did not want to be confused with them so we decided to change our name again. We thought about new names for a couple months and we came up with Dragon Fountain and made the switch. In June of 2001 in walked Jim Williams to pick up the bass guitar and add some great vocals and texture to Dragon Fountain. Jim DeLozier and Jim Williams had talked in the past about doing a project together and had been friends for about six years.
Under the gun to learn the material, with only weeks before the first of the summer shows, the four of us went to work to bang out a set for the summer. In this set we added four new songs and kept three. The songs that have been added are Suffocate; You Are the Problem, Slow Suicide and The Truth. The newer songs have gotten heavier. We are loud, heavy and hard and we are sticking to our guns. We are going forward with our drop-tuned riffs, heavy syncopated drums and in-your-face vocals and harmonies. We cannot be all things to all people so we thought we would just be honest with ourselves and play what we want to play. We hope you like it but more importantly we like it.
