Artist History
What follows is an article that first appeared in the regional music magazine Kentucky Rocks. This article was titled Who Are The Codenames by Lou Waters. It appeared in the August 2001 issue.
Who are The Codenames? That is a very good question. Some would say myth, some joke, and some might even say legend.Truth is they may be all of the above.
I will attempt to tell you what I know about this mysterious band of musicians.I hope to shed some light into the dark recesses of this question.Who are The Codenames?
My first and last face to face encounter with The Codenames took place in a club that some say never existed.Vampire Slims.
Vampire Slims may be as dark a mystery as The Codenames.Located in Paradise a small western Kentucky town on the banks of the Green River.Vampire Slims was a musical legend.A club said to be so underground that many of the locals didn't even know of it's existence.Rumors of Stevie Ray Vaughn trying out new material there has reached my ears more than once. The sign on the door read Vampire Slims-Open Dusk Till Dawn-Live Music-All Night Till Day Light.
The owner an enigma himself was know only as Vampire Slim. Some say he was a roadie for The Rolling Stones in the late 60's and early 70's.Others say he was just as the name implied a vampire.
The night Vampire Slims burnt down is the night I saw The Codenames play live.I had been sent by this magazine to find out more about the legendary club.It just so happened that the feature band that night was The Codenames. They were introduced as local boys and by the reaction of the crowd appeared to be local favorites.
Their music was a mixture of styles tied together by a common thread of humor. Many of their songs were about zombies and other movie monsters."Vampires From Dawson Springs" appeared to be a favorite of their fans but it was their ode to car salesmen "Big Caddy Daddy" that had them dancing in the alise's.
Before they could finish their set a fire broke out near the stage and the club was cleared out.I never got t o interview the band or Vampire Slim and the club was reduced to ash.Apparently the local fire department didn't know of the clubs existence either.I heard that The Codenames had fired their manager earlier that night and he was latter the suspected arson.Another source told me that some of The Codenames had been injured in the fire.I could never confirm either of these reports.
I have lost my notes but I believe the fire took place in January of 1987.Vampire Slims was never rebuilt and The Codenames appeared to drop off the face of the earth.
Then one night while at my computer they reappeared on the music website mp3.com with two songs and a promise of more to come.Still funny and still a mystery.
Who are The Codenames?Fourteen years later I still don't know but I intend to find out.
