Artist History
Rennie "Dubnut" Foster Artist Bio from back then till right now.
Rennie first absorbed the percussive rhythms that would be the soundtrack for his life as a very young child. On the road with his parents drum corps, travelling and competing, Rennie developed a keen interest in both percussion based music and performance.
In 1983, at the tender age of eleven, Rennie asked an older DJ for some music to practice breakin' with. Listening over and over trying to figure out how the beats seemed to melt into each other without ending stirred an obsession that is still in effect.
Throughout his teenage years, Rennie was already living in a world of beats. Early Chicago House, Hip Hop, Electro, breaking, bombing and rhyming all finally lead Mr. Foster to the realm of DJing where he has excelled ever since. After a few years developing his versatile turntablism, Rennie began rocking local crowds with an incendiary style of deep, hard, unrelenting funk. His unique style of Jackin' house and Technotic grooves, combined with Hip Hop tricks and wicked scratching skills, went on to be dubbed as a whole new genre by Japan's Tribal magazine "B-Boy House".Playing parties and clubs in Victoria, Vancouver and beyond, led him to his now legendary three year residency at "Fluid" in his hometown of Victoria. Relocating to Japan in 1998, he became a resident at Loop in the stylish Shibuya district of Tokyo, Asia's home club to the likes of Basement Jaxx, DJQ and Basil. He went on to guest some of the most notable clubs in Asia including Mission, M.O. and Yellow in Tokyo and the Dam in Seoul, Korea. Over the years, Rennie has shared the decks with such living legends as Frankie Knuckles, Grandmaster Flash and Danny Tenaglia as well as greats like Johnny Fiasco, Mark Farina, Cari Lekabusch, Drivetrain, AX:US, Gemini, Joel Mull, John Howard, John Selway, Stacy Pullen, Kenny Glascow, Donald Glaude, Taylor and King Britt just to name a few.
His first release on Impeccable records "House.Work." was released in 1997 and went on to chart everywhere from Amsterdam to Miami. After winning Mixer magazine's "Next Big thing" contest in 1998 with his partner Nicholas Martin (Peng Records UK, ) Rennie signed with Los Angeles label Phatt Phunk releasing the white label Urban Ghost EP and the "Chocolate Faktory" 12" which received excellent charting and critical acclaim in magazines such as Mixer, Mixmag and XLR8R. In 1999, Rennie relocated in Toronto maintaining a Thursday and Saturday night residency at "Weave" niteclub and had a chance to DJ all over Eastern Canada and the U.S. It was here that he had his twin daughters and decided to move back to his hometown of Victoria with newfound inspiration.
Currently, Rennie hosts a weekly radio show "Tribalife" with well known Tokyo club DJ Kan Shinomura [Code, Destro, Maniac Love] ,Tuesday nights at 12:30PDT on CFUV 101.9fm or heard around the world in real audio at cfuv.uvic.ca. Rennie is always workin on new trax and diverse remixes .He recently remixed Sub Pop recording artists "Hot Hot Heat"and has since found himself in demand to rework projects for many other indie-rock acts. Rennie has recently signed with up and coming label "Free the Funk/Free records" located in Seattle[www.solidrate.com] .Rennie`s trax "Mirror in the Mornin" and "Deserted" are now available on the Free the Funk vinyl release "Various Voices".
