Medium - "Terra Firma", 5-song CD
The Kings of Rock
YourSound.com CD Review by
Michael Baldino, 07-17-2001
Aside from the obvious perks of getting tons of cool free shit and being pleasured by hordes
of writer groupies, the coolest thing about being a music critic is being one of the first people
to hear a band that will change the course of popular music. Imagine getting an advance copy
of Nevermind - damn right, you'd be jealous. Well, I've got the premier disc from Medium, and
the worst thing I have to say about it is that I've played it so much already that I'll be sick of it
long before it hits heavy rotation-I've got my stereo set on permanent repeat. Imagine Kyuss,
Badmotorfinger-era Soundgarden, Only Living Witness, and a touch of Tool filtered through a
still thoroughly individualistic-sounding band, and you've got Medium. Featuring guitarist Pete
Cortese (ex-Overcast) and drummer Derek Kerswill (ex-Long Distance Runner and Shadows
Fall), Medium is a supergroup of sorts, and it's hard to believe that the stunning vocals of
Dean Ross and the unshakeable rhythm of bassist Kevin Schuler are the work of
newcomers. Intelligent lyrics, emotional vocals, riffs and rhythms that simultaneously pound
and caress, instantly memorable and catchy hooks, this is the way music was meant to be
played. Real rock has returned.
