GEAR: I've got a mac with ProTools and Digital Performer, and XV-88, RealPiano Pro module (for acoustic piano), 1080 (some french horn sounds, especially the muted horns from the 1st orchestra card - yummy!), Korg Ns5R (GREAT glock bells), E-MU MPS+ Or chestral keyboard (bassoon, oboe, English Horn, Pizz Strings), and a E-MU EX4 Turbo. Also Vitous (woodwinds), AO and the 97 upgrade(some brass and all the ww runs and things), Kirk Hunter Strings (most of my string sounds), DJ Master Violin Library, QL B rass (most of my brass sounds), Roland Percussion, Strings, Brass, and WW, and other private collections of 5 or 6 sample disks (Howard, Zimmer and the like). I also found importing all the "non-pitch-specific" sounds into my computer and letting Digit a l Performer handle those on the timeline running with my midi stuff has worked tremendously and saved my at least 256 or so of sample RAM (I've got about 2.8 gigs of orchestra samples imported onto one of my drive, so it's practically like having five o r s i x full blown samplers). Sounds like ww runs, all the non-pitched percussion (rolls, crashes, and so on), orch fx, and anything else I won't need to play a melody or chord progression on. aa Bˇˇ

PHILOSOPHY ON MIXING: It really seems that orchestration and mixing go hand in hand. I do a lot a volume and filter "tweeking" for different parts of the orchestra, but the biggest part of getting that big sound I love is in the orchestration. Why does all of Williams' stuff sound so great? Sure, Shawn Murphy does a great job at mixing (especially since he only has one hand), but 90% of that sound is in the orchestration, not the reverb. I'm fanatical about getting the most realistic sound possible, b ut I'm always studying an orchestral score of something in my free time, whether it's William's stuff or simply The Planets, Tchaikovsky, or Beethoven. Figuring out what instruments double other instruments to bring out a melody or what sounds compete with others helps me tremendously when trying to "clear out" the soundfield. ,,

“Jason Graves is obviously a talented musician, because this movie soundtrack piece sounds like something I would hear in the next Star Wars prequel. This is dynamic, people! If you want to hear solid, well performed musical action, here's a great place to start! It is obvious from the first time you listen to his music that Jason Graves is adept at what he does. He writes music that is not simply music, but also a visual effect as well. As the music soars, you can hear the beautiful tones, while watching a movie in your mind, seeing the battle scenes, feeling the rumble of attacks, basically watching as the movie of the music unfolds before you! The power to evoke visual wonders through music is just the talent that allows film scores to capture our hearts time after time. That's the power Jason Graves has mastered in his art. This is magnificently mastered art in pure form, and I honestly would have thought this was a John Williams score if I hadn't known it was by Jason Graves.” Jonathan Sanders, Gods of Music ************************************************************ “This is not just GREAT film music, but GREAT music period. Well orchestrated, nice effects, well constructed. It's as good as anything the serious guys who get the NY Phil commissions are writing these days. Disney should have paid this guy to write the Millenium "American Mahler Eighth"! Great stuff.” Paul Wehage ******************************************************************* "If you like Unbelievable soundtrack scores, seriously check this artist out. You will be hearing a lot of his music in movies. Look out John Williams!!!"
