    Press Reviews
The following are excerpts from THE JERSEY JOURNAL, February 15, 1997 issue, Section D ***"Jersey City's Only Filipino Alternative Band Aims for a Wider Audience"*** by Michael J. Vicencio ****Jersey City was the initial meeting place for the members of the Filipino alternative music band The Grudge, but one might say the group's seed was sown in the Philippines, where its five members grew up listening to American music. ...The Grudge is Jersey City's only original, self-produced Filipino alternative music band. Last October, the group... debuted its first self-titled CD. Recorded at Pearl Studios near Journal Square, it contains 10 original tracks, three of them sung in Tagalog, one of the principal languages of the Philippines and a bonus track entitled "Walang Pera" or "No money." The CDs... are for sale at several Filipino stores in Jersey City. "We printed 500 (CDs)," Alain, the band's active manager, says. "If we get some money out of this, that's fine. We just want people to hear (us)." The Grudge is best known for playing Filipino social gatherings and celebrations. For the pasttwo years, they have entertained huge audiences during the Filipino-American Friendship Day spring festivals, which have been held in part at the outdoor Exchange Place plaza. Last year, the band also played for the US-Filipino Expos in Edison. In addition, The Grudge frequents New York City venues such as the Recession Cafe and Club Amadeos for smaller, more intimate Filipino get-togethers. "Filipino like live bands," Alain says. "We thought we'd do better this way, playing to a Filipino audience. If we get enough support, we'll try to break into the American scene. That's one of our goals as a band, to break the race barrier. "In order for this to happen, Alain jokes that The Grudge will have to write more lyrics in English. In addition to New York City and Jersey City, the band is targeting the Philippines as a prospective audience, particularly Manila, where American alternative music is popular among the younger generation. ...The band is aware that the road to success in the music industry is a difficult one. On top of the work they put into their music, all [four] members hold full-time jobs. "With our jobs, it's touch to get together and practice," Alain says. "I'm doing all the (promotional)work. Right now, we're looking for a manager, someone who can handle us. "But The Grudge is already receiving a special kind of support. Alain and Chary's father, Fiorello C. Salvo hosts "Magandang Filipinas" or "Beautiful Philippines" at WNJR 1430-AM, the only Filipino AM radio program in the immediate area. ...Not surprisingly, the host supports his sons' musical endeavors. "It's great," Chary says. "On Saturdays, our Dad plays two of our songs on the radio."****
