Artist History
Named after a stage illusion, created in the 1800’s by Dr. John Henry Pepper, the music of PEPPER’S GHOST is capturing the imagination of a rapidly growing audience. As writers and performers, the five-member group demonstrates a collective zeal for melody and the enduring qualities of rock music.
Since the band’s inception in 1999, they have shared the stage with many national acts, and received numerous awards and distinctions. Their 2001 release, entitled “Opening Night” drew critical acclaim amidst comparisons to Bowie and The Beatles. Michael Harrington, of the Philadelphia Inquirer, likened the live recording, augmented by a fifteen piece orchestra to "Paul McCartney in a Motown cabaret, directed by David Bowie."
For lead singers Michael and Anthony Montesano, music has always been a family affair. Encouraged from an early age by their father, the two developed a daily routine of writing and performing together. After deciding to pursue a career in music, they joined forces with multi-instrumentalist Rob Bennett; and so began PEPPER’S GHOST. The latest incarnation of the band has Owen Biddle on bass, and Zil, who was a member of the successful, Philadelphia-based K-floor for three years, on drums. Owen and Zil have been close friends and band mates since they were in high school, and also attended Berklee College of Music together.
The band’s love of creating a memorable performance is rivaled only by their pronounced dedication to songwriting. Anthony recalls his first time hearing “Bicycle Race” by Queen: “no idle time; right to the point.” With heartfelt singing, inspired harmonies, and solid instrumentation, the group shares their passion for getting to the essence of a song.
“Whether we’re writing new music or playing a show, it’s always a great time,” says Rob. With remarkable chemistry and a rich, dynamic sound, there is much enthusiasm within the ranks. PEPPER’S GHOST is eager to prove itself, on stage and in the studio.
