Press Reviews
CMJ New Music ReportMarch 29, 1999Issue 611, Vol. 58 No. 1ReviewsEl Gato A&R PickEverybody’s A Piñata (EP)The four guys from Denton, Texas who comprise El Gato perform dynamic, uncommonly arranged mood-rock songs. The band’s moniker is very appropriate; each song is approached with the admirable stealth, subtlety and focus of a cat on the prowl. Tender guitar, keyboard and vocal melodies metamorphose into brilliant cascades of invigorating noise, before they plunge back into stillness. What ultimately makes this music beautiful and inviting is that El Gato never strays too far from placidity. Even as the music gathers strength and speed, working itself into a sonic disturbance, the players always latch on to something unpredictably pristine. – Kelso Jacks |
