Press Reviews
(1)3 NUTTS - "He got my attention because of his beats- they're not real complicated, they're simple, but interesting. He just made them on the drum machine. What impressed me about this is B. Down did all the production, he's the executive producer and I guess it's his own label, and he raps. When you read the liner notes he did everything. You can tell he's a one man miracle worker. Apparently this [Rap Tactics] is his second album, his first one was called 'The L. A. Rap Junkie'. He's from L.A., and he's got some up and comin artists featured on here from L.A. as well as the Bay. B. Down is real lyrical. He doesn't come with strong stories, he doesn't have a tongue twistin style or nothing, he gets you with his lyrics. And he keeps it real, he raps only about what he's goin through. I'd put this in a categoryy with Ras Kass or Heiroglyphics - he doesn't rap about gang bangin or sellin drugs. He raps a lot about makin it in this music business. I respect that he didd the whole thing on his own, he didn't wait for anybody else. I give him props for that." --King JC (Murder Dog Magazine, Volume 8, Number 1); (2)Listen.com; (3)"B. Down presents: Independent Game" was featured among the Best of the Best Independent New Releases in Murder Dog magazine (Volume 8, Number 4); (4)AMG EXPERT REVIEW (of "B. Down - Rap Tactics"): 4 STARS - Without any major-label connections and little assistance, B. Down still managed to create an impressive indie rap album with Rap Tactics. The album showcases not only his MC skills and production techniques but, more than anything, his ambition. The young rapper from Los Angeles embodies the DIY mentality without ever resorting to exploitation or cheap gimmicks. Rap Tactics is a respectable album more interested in impressing you with its rhymes and beats than violence and sex — a true rarity in the West Coast rap underground. Guests include Poppin' Fresh, J. Dandridge, Blue Steel, Richie-B, Gold, and Kutt Master Kellam. Recommended to anyone looking for some indie rap from the West Coast [rap] scene emphasizing hip-hop rather than gangsta motifs. — Jason Birchmeier (All Music Guide); (5)AMG EXPERT REVIEW (of "B. Down presents: Independent Game"): 3 STARS - Though in form a compilation album for Rap Junkie Records, Independent Game actually functions more like another B. Down album. The Los Angeles-based rapper/entrepreneur handles most of the songs on the album — to be exact, B. Down either writes, co-writes, or produces 15 of the album's 17 songs. So there's a good chance if you've enjoyed B. Down's past albums — Rap Tactics and The L.A. Rap Junkie — then you'll probably enjoy this compilation as well. Some of the other rappers making appearances include Blue Steel, Poppin' Fresh, Drastic, J. Dandridge, Mr. Sinatra, Big Rags, and more. The music is very much grounded in the West Coast gangsta rap idiom, particularly the Los Angeles strain. B. Down isn't particularly gangsta, but his roster of guests definitely are. — Jason Birchmeier (All Music Guide) |
