Press Reviews
"One of the few bands keeping late 90's aggro rock relevant today. Their secret: Lose the cheese; Keep the meaty riffs" - Alternative Press (July 2003)
6gig - broadcast. Trans:MISSION.red
6gig are perhaps Maine's best kept secret, a band who despite their musically remote location, ooze the edgy emotional competence and potential of post NY hardcore giants like Quicksand and Helmet, channeling such heralded influences into moody slabs of driving hard rock.
A precursor to the bands upcoming new album "Mind Over Mind", "broadcast. Trans:MISSION.red" is a collection of new tracks from the aforementioned effort along with a few b-sides and a demo version of an older track and while such compilations usually turn out to be a throw away release for the band to sell while on the road, this EP actually manages to somewhat serve as a bridge between new and old. The album cuts, "Proud" and "Free", effortlessly display the evolution that has taken place over the past two years and benefit highly from the greater production values that were implemented this time out, with producer Matt Wallace (Faith No More, The Replacements) bringing songs of a much more intricate and grandiose scale out of the band.
While such descriptive terms are often frightening for a bands fans as they almost always thinly veil an attempt for a commercial direction, the same core sound that made "Tincan Experiment" such a refreshing listen is still thankfully locked in place here. The only real difference is this time out is that rather than the rough around the edges nature it emerged in before, it now sees the band elevating into some epic buildups and breakdowns, suggesting a stronger cohesion which seems almost unintentional as the songs are no less honest or authentic. To create such a paradox in this day and age is no easy feat but then again, neither is taking a Maine based band on a national level, so this quartet are obviously doing something right.
Sure there's still a few bumps in the road left to pave out, but none that really jar the listeners attention and while a bit more new material would have been a nice touch to give this release a bit more lasting value, this transmission still serves as a good indication that bigger and better things are yet to come when "Mind Over Mind" sees its eventual release .-theprp.com
6gig - Tincan Experiment
6gig's music is an unexpected treat in the bleak and harsh climate of today's heavy music scene. Taking a page from the post hardcore book, this group melds the stylings of acts like Handsome and Quicksand and gives them a modern edge that is reminiscent of acts like Far or Sunny Day Real Estate. For lack of a better term the groups music lies somewhere in the emocore vein, but they're more progressive and edgier than most bands that float in that genre and as such this CD is a welcome entrant into CD players worldwide.
The vocals included on this album distinctly bring Handsome to mind with their timid nature and mildly hoarse tones that carve out huge hooks with immense melody. Their structure is top notch and the notes are held with skill and enthusiasm, allowing them to convey emotion on a sincere level. Guitars are littered with effect coated excursions, yet they also drive home grating riffs that seem highly volatile and yet surprisingly easy to take in. The tone they achieve during the various breakdowns are oddly alien sounding, but their allure also lies in this fact, and the group is also solidified by it. Bass is humble and doesn't really stand out in the tracks overall, but its presence is indeed felt as it accompanies the guitar riffs, adding the ever necessary low end depth that gives the riffs a solid punch. Drums are rigid and focus on snare driven beats that pay close attention to the association between the highhat and the kick drum and although they may not be the most vivid percussive experience, they manage to tie the tracks together and fill in the gaps with their eager charm.
Perhaps its the nostalgia this band brings with their familiar sounding vocals that make this album so enjoyable. But if this is the case, you can be assured that the bands of the past never treaded in the water that this group plunges into and that's what seems to be the defining quality. It's a mixture of the old with the new that is done with an earnest respect and yet it's also a completely new sounding sonic environment that they tread so gracefully upon. Fans who are admire the NY post hardcore sound of old should definitely check this album out and there's even a good chance that those who enjoy groups like Failure and Sense Field will also connect with this release, as its well rounded energy is at no point pretentious or syrupy, rather its more focused on epic song structures and cutting edge melody. 6gig's experiment is a lot more modern than the album title suggests, but in essence they have used such outdated technology to bridge a gap between the old and the new to create an album that deserves a look from any open minded heavy music fan out there
who enjoys engulfing harmony and catchy songs filled with hooks. -theprp.com
Before listening to Tincan Experiment, 6gig's first full-length album with an independent label, I was a huge fan of these four guys from Portland, Maine. About a year ago, after hearing "Hit The Ground", 6gig instantly became a large part of the music I listen to. There is a style to their music, that is definitely their own. The vocals (Walter Craven) on this album are simply incredible, supported by deep and hard-hitting guitar work (Steve Marquis & Walt), a very melodic bass (Weave), and a heart-stopping head-pounding drum line (Dave Rankin). Their sound is fresh, new and exciting in a society craving for something different than all the rest. Walt's vocals clearly define their music, as the bass and guitar are in your face, for a mixture of heavy and melodic sounds. All twelve tracks on this album show their diversity and ability to be in your face, yet calming and mellow. "Method", "Hit The Ground" and "Yesterday" are tracks that display heavy sounds and influences. Tracks such as "Talkshow", "Built For It", "Kl-ones" and "Willie" are very smooth sounding, displaying Walt's vocal ability
and his amazing voice. 6gig's, Tincan Experiment, covers a wide range of style and music. Fans should feed their hunger for something different, by checking them out. This new and exciting release is just the beginning, for pioneers in a new genre of music. For more information on 6gig, check out their website at www.6gig.com. -the-eko.com
