    Artist History
SugarTrip was formed in 1998 as an all-original alt-mainstream rock group by lead guitarist Joe Khan, bassist Ken Busato, and former CFNY personality Marla West. Previous to SugarTrip, Joe played in numerous groups such as Indigo Blue, Whirld and Stool alongside future members of One, Bass Is Base, and Robert Michaels. Joe played throughout the Toronto club scene, on radio and on TV including perennial CITY-TV favourite, Breakfast TV. Joe’s guitar playing style is best described as a stylized hybrid of influences encompassing rock, jazz, funk, and blues. Joe chose to start SugarTrip to deliver music that was commercially-oriented and appealing to the listening audience. He composed the music and sings lead on the tracks appearing on this CD. While no stranger to music, having played trumpet for several years, Ken Busato was a total neophyte to the bass upon forming SugarTrip. During the band’s inaugural practice, Ken knew a total of 4 notes although he played them really well! In fact, Ken learned so quickly that he was asked to play in local band Keep 6 while also remaining a core member of SugarTrip. Ken’s unique style is a foundation of SugarTrip’s sound. 2001 marked a big year in the development of the band solidifying its current line-up. In this year SugarTrip added the expertise of three new musicians to its ranks. Having played in many Kingston and Toronto Area bands (27 Main, Singing Dix to name a few), Richard Bird came on board as rhythm and 2nd lead guitar, providing solid musicianship and the experience a select few can match. Rich’s straight-ahead playing style provides the perfect complement to Joe’s ambient technique. Rich is also an accomplished singer providing backing vocals on the tracks. The present monster of rhythm, Avery Yearwood came to SugarTrip in April 2001, with 15 years of playing experience in various genres and styles of drumming and percussion. His experience includes stints in bands such as Entity. Avery quickly established himself as an integral member of the band and has added the role of chief recording engineer to his duties. SugarTrip also introduced an electronic edge to their sound through keyboardist Derrick Gray, former CSCR Radio DJ and Production Director as well as a board members of Scarborough College Community Radio. Derrick also did a stint as DJ at a few of the Toronto alternative night clubs. Derrick’s playing style is atmospheric as he provides sweeping layers of sound underneath the band’s driving rhythms. Derrick brings over 21 years of keyboard experience. Together with Avery and Joe, Derrick is also responsible for a lot of the band’s networking initiatives. January 2002 marked the introduction of Sarah Hebbes as lead vocals for SugarTrip. The youngest of the band, Sarah does not lack the experience of the other members of SugarTrip. Sarah had wanted to be a singer since the early 80's when she was rocking to the sounds of the Miny Pops, The Chip Munks, and Sharron Lois and Bram. In elementary school she sang in school choirs and competed in music festivals. "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" was her biggest hit in grade seven when she took home first place in the junior girls solo category! More recently Sarah has sang in the local bar scene in Barrie. She knew she was serious enough at this point so after that she packed up my things and moved to the big city to see what would happen. Sarah also spends her time acting. SugarTrip has played many Toronto venues including The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern, Lee's Palace, The 360 Club, the Rivoli, the Bamboo, and the landmark El Mocambo. SugarTrip is actively soliciting various venues and festival dates as the band’s fan base increases.
