November 2000: Room 18's official last show at The Century Lounge in Providence. December 2000: Although there were no more shows for us, we were infrequently rehearsing songs for what would have been the second full length record. It was at this point that things began errupting in the band.Tension was obvious,as was the division between members.Rob and Marlon were on one side of the fence, wanting to promote the previous album more before recording another one, while Jason,Dino, and I were writing new songs, excited with the results and anxious to get back to the studio. January 2001: Rob officially drove the final nail in Room 18's coffin. After a heated email slamming everyone (especially me) for the band's overall lacking attitude,he declared to stop working for the band, leaving us no alternative but to end.Imediately afterwards,I called one final band meeting to talk things through. I had no intention at this point in continuing with Room 18,but I did want to clear the air between us all.Rob and Marlon stated they needed to take a break from music for awhile, so I asked Dino if he would still be interested in recording the new songs we wrote. He,as well as Jay,decided to keep going with a band, and thus The Society Party was born. February 2001: The leftover newly constructed Room 18 songs were easily converted to Society Party songs, basically because Jay, Dino, and myself wrote all of them together without Rob and Marlon present. They were a bit different than the heavier songs of yesteryear, and focused a lot more on catchier, poppier rhythms. We began working on songs and wrote two new ones, "Wonderful" and "Officer Freely".The Society Party was beginning with a punch. March 2001: We came out of the woodwork for one night and played a show at The Safari Lounge in downtown Providence. We hooked up with Jay from the band 'Nocturnal Sun' and had him guest spot on bass guitar. The show was not Room 18, but another side project from an album Jay Byrne and I wrote called, "The Tom Harding Barbeque."The show was a mess, but proved to us that we still had the staying power to keep moving ahead. It was that night though that Jay, Dino, and I decided to close the book on "Tom Harding" and all the songs it encompassed. From that point on, the main focus would be 'The Society Party'. April 2001: By this point we had almost an album's worth of new material, but no money to record in a real studio. We didn't want to settle for the haphazard recording techniques of Derek Martin at Reptile Studios, and also wanted a different sound than the Room 18 album.Jay and I have recorded at least 8 albums on our own in the last 6 years via 4 and 8 track,so we were pretty comfortable with recording on our own.Jay actually has a good knack for the recording process, so he decided to buy a digital recording studio to lay down our songs. He ended up purchasing a Korg D-1600 16 track digital recording unit.It was with this that we began work on the very first ep for 'The Society Party,' entitled, "The Many Faces of Harry Hyde." May 2001: We now had enough material to play out live. The problem was, up until this point Jay was playing all the bass lines for recording, as well as guitars. We needed a bass player and it wasn't easy to find one.We began asking around, and ended up meeting a girl named Sarah Kollett who used to play in a group called 'Lackadaisic'.She seemed interested in jamming with us, so we decided to take her on.We began rehearsing for a show that her Uncle organized in her hometown of Uxbridge, Mass. The show was slated for July 7th, and we basically spent large amounts of time going over the songs with her so she could learn them well. June 2001: With a two week break in the start of this month,we came together the last two weeks, rehearsing endlessly with Sarah. Her obvious contrast in music and style with us was beginning to show through more and more, as was her complete phobia of driving an automobile. She refused driving herself to practice, and left it up to Jay and I to pick her up and drop her off at home if we wanted to play. This, among other things, was beginning to take a toll on me, and I was starting to feel used and walked over. Meanwhile Dino was working 50-60 hours a week for an internship at a hospital, leaving his time with 'The Society Party' to a very limited level.Unlike Room 18, there was no band unity even from the beginning of things."The Society Party" was formed as a result of frustration and wanting to make better and stronger music than any previous efforts, and that point has always remained steady. But it seemed as if everyone had different intentions for being a member of the band. July 2001: We played the show at Uxbridge, July 7th. Our very good friend Tony flew in from California to film some additional interview footage for the documentery he shot the previous October about Room 18.It was during this time that a new phase of "The Society Party" began. Since the show at Uxbridge was hardly a success,Jay and I had a long and informative talk with Tony about the prospect of moving to sunny California.By the end of the day, the two of us were pretty convinced that Hollywood was our calling.Even at the tail end of Room 18, the thought of moving to California with our music was a suppressed desire. When the band folded, the idea seemed more and more tangible. We decided to bring "The Society Party" to the west coast in Feburary...a challenge as well as a musical voyage we won't soon forget!! The only depressing fact is that Dino will not be joining us on our journey. With all due respect, Dino is happy living where he is and quite frankly, is not certain if California is for him.Jay and I will always miss having him around with us, but also appreciate his honesty and understanding about the entire situation. The realization of leaving, along with the absence of a bassist, has enhanced the drive of recording as much material as possible before we leave. Our current goal is to make 6 solid E.P.'s before moving to California. We will have plenty of material to shop around when auditioning a bass player and drummer. Present: So we have taken "The Society Party" to a new level. We don't want to go back to the bump and grind and same old story of playing half empty music clubs in Providence....We're now a studio band, cutting ep after ep until we leave for California in Feburary. The first ep is called, "The Many Faces of Harry Hyde" and was recorded from April to May.It is a six song ep and has a limited 100 copy pressing in album jacket styled cd casing. You can purchase CD's through MP3.com or email thesocietyparty@hotmail.com People have been pleasantly surprised by the songs and are anxiously awaiting ep # 2. The old ROOM 18 message board is now run by local rock photographer Katie Rysz and she has changed it over to a SOCIETY PARTY board so if you want to check that out go here: [url]/artists/278/the_society_party.html[url] Thanks for your time and I hope you enjoy the new stuff.
