Artist description
Composer Ross Popoff's music has been premiered and performed
throughout the United States in venues such as Harris Hall
at the Aspen Music Festival, Carnegie Hall in New York City,
the Gamper Festival of Contemporary Music at the Bowdoin Music
Festival, at Brandies University and at Jordan Hall in Boston.
He has received commissions and performances from ensembles
such as the New England Conservatory Contemporary Ensemble,
The Yesaroun' Duo, the Inter School Orchestras of New York,
the Rivers Music School, the Great Neck Select Singers, the
Bowdoin Summer Music Festival Chamber Players and many others.
Popoff is also the recipient of numerous awards and in 2002
alone, was noted as a finalist in the ASCAP Morton Gould Young
Composer Awards, a semi-finalist in the Tampa Bay Composer Forum
Prize for Excellence in Camber Music Composition Competition
and winner of the Bay Youth Orchestras of Virginia
Composition Competition.
In addition to his work as a composer, Ross Popoff is an
active conductor having studied with Jeffery Milarsky,
and has given performances in such venues as the Bowdoin
Summer Music Festival and at Harvard University. He is
also active as a new music ensemble administrator working
as assistant director and technical supervisor for the
New England Conservatory Contemporary Ensemble. In
February of 2002 Ross assisted Teresa Marrin Nakra,
artistic director of Immersion Music, during her residency
at Harvard University, producing and performing in a
concert of new music developed for and by gestural interface
technologies.
As a music educator, Ross Popoff assisted in the Metropolitan
Opera Guild's Creating Original Opera Program in Lynn, MA and
at the Conservatory Lab Charter School in South Boston, where
elementary school students wrote, produced and performed in
their own original opera.
Popoff's principal teachers have included Richard Danielpour,
John Heiss, George Tsontakis, Samuel Adler and Roger Ames.
He is currently pursuing a Bachelors of Music degree with a
concentration in Music Education at the New England
Conservatory of Music in Boston.
