Eric Gonzalez (Gutars, Samplers, and Back up vocals,) and Greg Martinez (Bass) are the veterans amongst the five members. Kevin Jordan (Drums, Percussion) was the third person to join the band in 98 followed by Rolando Mora (Vocals) in 99. The Gauntlet.com Orkest are a fresh face from the California underground scene, and weave an intricate web of aggressive hard rock that is flavored with multilingual vocalization and a progressive musical approach. Alternating from an emotional wave similar to such groups as Flaw and Onesidezero to a more intriguing rage-filled thrash style, Orkest really cause the listener to stop what they're doing and pay their full attention to the music being performed on the demo. The worldly feel of this demo brings to mind the powerful eccentricity of Puya minus the orchestration, and really adds much to the songs. With the massive appeal of recent crossover bands experimenting with multiple languages such as Ill Nino and 40 Below Summer, Orkest's unique presentation is that more admirable, as this demo sounds exquisite. Rolando Mora's prominent vocals are just incredibly energetic, and backed by a variety of instrumental experimentation and sound innovation, this demo succeeds in winning over the listener and creating heavy interest in future efforts from the band. To even consider that this is simply a demo is staggering, as musically it is so much more, the songs presented have the potential to helm a new musical movement based on true talent. This is pure artistic bliss, the added multi-cultural element only furthers the concept that Orkest are living, breathing art forms. "Revivisense" is a beauty to have grace one's ears, and has the weight and stamina to hold it's own against the likes of Tool and Dredg, bands that many feel embody what musical art is about. Mora's vocals are consistently uplifting, and Kevin Jordan's constant percussion helps flesh out Orkest as a band to keep one's eyes on. Eric Gonzalez' guitar-playing feels natural whether he be playing thick chunky riffs or more detailed passages, and with Greg Martinez' forceful low-end crunch add, the group are given a solid canvas musically to work on. "Insensitivity is one juggernaut of a track that just totally defies classification, after listening to Orkest's other songs this one track just takes all that one may have been able to use to describe the band and destroys it. Experimental to say the least, Orkest prove here that they are more than just another impressive crossover band, they are a machine of musical perfection. To pass by Orkest's wealth of potential should be a sin. J Ferret/ http://www.thegauntlet.com --------------------------------------- UNEARTHED.com The melding of the visual arts and music has been around since man learned to use his imagination. And recently, more and more bands have incorporated art and theatrics into their shows. For example, Los Angeles groups such as Downset, The Shapeshifters, and The Visionaries all make public knowledge their affiliation with graffiti and urban art crews (CBS, UTI, THC, etc.). Similarly, the local band Orkest strives to mix "natural rhythms within a systematic artfield." What is created is a visual and auditory experience that is both potent and demiurgic, and their recently released three-song demo beautifully showcases this band's work. The demo begins with my favorite track, called "Disembler." It is a streaming yet hard metal groove with bits of bouncy sing-along fodder. Amid the maverick vibrations, bilingual lead singer Rolando Mora proclaims, "I'm walking on the moon, and I ain't coming down anytime soon." The next song, "Placebo Effect," is a classic mellow-to-harsh tune. This offering does have its creative moments, as an echoing interlude contributes empyreal particles of atmosphere to the CD. The demo ends with "Revivisense," which means "come to life." And the boys definitely do come to life on this capricious and raw guitar-driven jam.Hailing from the streets of Lynwood and Long Beach, this band is determined to share their art with the world. They are playing several shows, and posting their work on the website www.orkestmusic.com. And with the release of this demo, Orkest prove that they are not just a band, but an artistic culture. -Rikk eLhajRikk@UnEarthed.com\ ---------------------------------------- The Eko.com (-by keith) Very interesting quality of music brought forth by these Los Angeles rockers otherwise known as Orkest. Orkest's four-song demo provides the listener with a wide range of material. A brightly luminous expression of music including all aspects vocally from scorching screams to eloquent melodies with a touch of rapcore. Lyrically very interesting, exposing both sides from English to Spanish, combining the two create a melodic experience.Orkest's opening track, Disembler, begins with Espanől, and then erupts into well played out orchestration of melodies and crunchy guitar work mixed with perfectly executed screaming. Placebo Effect then directs the listener with a soothing voice into an angry, aggressive chorus. Very easy to listen to and envelop yourself completely into the words," It Seems So Familiar" as they repeat over and over as the song fades. As the demo concludes with Revivisense, Orkest displays the most melodic of the four tracks. Rolando Mora's vocals impressively display his ability and vocal range as the near seven-minute track leaves you asking for more. For a demo, amazingly these four tracks are all very well constructed, not to mention excellent, but to create a final product that simply speaks for itself. Orkest is a very good and well-developed band, not to mention riding the curtails of a big future in the music industry. Their musicianship really shines through on each of the four songs present on this demo, and leaves the listener really longing for more. They make use of their bilingual talents as well, somewhat like that of bands like Puya, Ill Nino, or Soulfly, however, they do it in a way that is extremely catchy and characterizes the music as a whole, while not appearing to be overbearing. I love the guitar work on the album, as well as the vocals and back up vocals, they really stand out and prevent me from prying this CD out of my player, it has been in for days now. I have to admit, I wish there was more than four songs on this disc, but the four here are exceptional, and I love each of them. I really don't have any complaints about the songs, except maybe that they are a little long and kind of Toolesque, but other than that, these guys are aiming for perfection. GREAT demo, I am waiting for more, and will be extremely surprised if there isn't more from these guys in the near future, they have what it takes. by: Raychul -------------------------------------- Breakthestatic.cjb.net Orkest is a fantastic underground band out of the Lynwood and Long Beach, Ca area that bring in a Latin influence to their music. These guys have been doing their thing for four years now making their mark in California. Their sound is similar to Puya, Ill Nino, and Soulfly. They bring out the heavy sound of Soulfly and mix it with a vocal style like Factory 81 or Nonpoint. The vocal duties of Rolando Mora incorporate well-sung melodies with heavy screams when the time is right. Eric Gonzalez has many duties in the band including guitars, samplers, and back up vocals. He does each part very well adding much to the band's music. His guitar playing is untouchable, mixing harmonics with heavy enchanting riffs, his sampling adds a little industrial feel to the music, and his back up vocals mix very well with Rolando's style. Then you have the great rhythm section of Greg Martinez (bass) and Kevin Jordan (drums). These two guys round out the band's sound and keep everyone else on the right path. The band has many strong songs on their Concepts of 2001 album. The tracks 'Revivisence' and 'Insensitivity' are captivating while the leadoff track 'Disembler' is maybe the band's strongest. It starts the cd off with a band and gets the listener's attention right off the bat. Orkest is a band that has immense potential to take over the world. They have an original sound, mixed with unique qualities like the sampling, and just come at you with straight out rock. Give these guys a chance and some time to evolve their sound, and we may be looking at the next Soulfly or Ill Nino. Rating: 8.5 out of 10 By: tizzy ----------------------------- Skratch Magazine: The blistering rock played by this SO CAL quintet is a thing of beauty. With a sound that calls to mind KORN and Limp Bizkit, the music on the E.P. I received was nothing short of brilliant. The opening track began in Spanish, then broke into a growing frenzy with the puonding beat that rocked me right out of my seat. Impecable vocals and stylish low sections between the blazing rock & roll seperate Orkest from the interchangable barrage of bands that style themselves after the OzzFest headliners. Their press release talks about their music in terms like "Sytematic artfield, Natural rhythms", and "Third dimensional". All I know is that this is some of the best rock I've heard from a new band in years. If you like you're music hard and rough, this is the band you've been waiting for.
