Les: A Sound Less Ordinary
Sounds like a common cliché, but Les' music isn't easily classified.
It is a virtual blender of rock formats: new metal, progressive, grunge,
emo, funk, California rock, power pop, electronica and folk rock. The
result is crushing solid sounds and rising sonic anthems, born from
dedicated, unforced, and unapologetic songwriting. The best words to
describe his music come this 25 year-old, NY based Asian American
himself as he labels it as:
"Loud but not noisy, epic alternative Rock"
In his self produced debut CD, "The View From Here", he borrows from
music that has shaped his life while forming a sound undeniably all his
own. Les draws upon the fullness and momentum shifts of Radiohead, the
darkness and intrigue of A Perfect Circle, the rawness and driving
guitars of the Pixies, and the guts-out soul bearing passion of
Nirvana. This concoction is a volatile mix that once consumed penetrates slowly
and explodes violently when inside.
While lyrics touch on "real" matters like respect for veterans and
feelings of violation following 9/11, it is the trials and tribulations of the
heart that dominate the narrative.
"Love Fades At Night" begins with the line "These days I wake up when
the sun sets" and tells the story of a person who struggles through
day, while awake at night, haunted by the memory of sleeping in the same bed
as the one who left him. In "The One That I", Les writes about the
frustration about being unable to break free of an emotionally abusive
relationship, a scenario, more common than anyone likes to admit.
Finally, "They Can" is story of a man who loves a girl so much that he
walks away from her because he knows it is impossible to be the man
that she deserves. These words may seem bitter and stinging, but rather,
they are a reflections life lessons learned and offer a cathartic
therapy to anyone who's lost love or is longing for it.
In an attempt to follow the tradition of the "great rock albums", "The
View From Here" is a 11-song journey, to heard as one piece, as it
starts off with immense power and ends with crushing strength. The
order and substance is designed to leave the listener emotionally
drained, introspective, haunted but hopeful.
Listen for yourself or better yet, put one a set of your favorite
headphones, close your eyes and experience. After all, life is simply
a collection of experiences, and we hope you enjoy this one.
