Artist description
Selected by Macleans Magazine as one of 100 Canadians to watch, and recently given his own one-hour national special on CBC's Definitely Not The Opera, 23 year-old Ian Janes is accomplished beyond his years.
In February, Janes performed on the nationally televised East Coast Music Awards show and was nominated for three awards, including Best New Artist, Blues Artist, and Male Artist of the Year. For last year's millennium celebration, Janes appeared on CBC Television's national broadcast, 2000 Today.
A singer, songwriter, producer, and performer, Janes has had music in his life for as long as he can remember. In November 1998, he released his debut CD, Occasional Crush. Distributed nationally by Tidemark Music and Distribution, this ten-song recording was written, arranged, and co-produced by Janes, elevating this young musician into the ranks of some of Canada's best new talent.
Critics comments: "an astonishingly confident and mature collection, providing a steady, invigorating groove on every tune," writes the Halifax Daily News. "Janes delivers a full set of incredibly polished originals in a relaxed smokey voice that goes down easy," states Halifax's Chronicle Herald/Mail Star.
The CD quickly became one of Halifax's top selling independent releases. Fresh and innovative in his musical style, Janes' foundation lies in rhythm and blues, reflecting elements of classical soul, contemporary jazz, pop, and funk.
Taking exceptional care and effort to intertwine melodies, chord structures, and lyrics, Janes creates songs that are direct, intelligent, and memorable. Inspired by his own experiences and those of others, he has the innate ability of engaging his listeners. His sultry, expressive vocals create an atmosphere that keeps people wanting more.
Janes has recently started work on his sophomore release, with bassist Bruce Dixon and legendary drummer Omar Hakim providing the foundation. Expect the album in stores by fall 2001 |
