Artist description
Big Open Road plays rythmic, song-oriented rock music. With rythms drawn from rock, ska, and Fat Boy Slim, and hot, wah-wah guitars, Big Open Road finds its own voice without using cliches. They stand for songs with lyrics that travel and beats to move them. On their first ep, "Humble to the Bone", you can listen to songs about wealth, loneliness, and word play, and still shake your rump. |

Press Reviews
BIG OPEN ROAD
Some reviews for “Humble to the Bone”
“…”Humble to the Bone” is a great introduction to Big Open Road…a wallop of talent…They resemble early Barenaked Ladies with their whimsical lyric content and poppy sound…tight and well-polished…the lyrics flow with ease..the vocals and instruments are on the money…Hillary Chapman’s vocals fit like a glove with Markus’s funky drum beats, Lee’s bass lines, and Mitch’s guitar gift.”
Kerry Bryer, Music Dish, March 2001
“”Humble to the Bone” tells great stories … especially “Gone for Good” and “Lines of My Face” … the lyrics are very poetic and the music helps to reel you in and flesh it all out.” Muscene, Dawn Robinson, March, 2001
Some reviews of the single “Without You”/”Misunderstood”
“…fun-sounding, up-tempo tunes that get you moving…”

Future Charters winners, August 1999
“They have the sound … 'Without You' is good alt.rock with a sound not quite indie. It's got a polish to it that puts it above most of the self-produced, self-aggrandized
energy of bands not quite off the ground yet. These guys are on the 2nd
floor, and I can hear the elevator… A good little cd. Deserves to be spun around and around. I did it. Poppy rock for a windy day.”
Ben Ohmart, Beatsezine, March 1999
“…The band also shines lyrically. Unlike many other pop songwriters, main lyricist Chapman, appears to respect the role lyrics play in creating good music. The occasionally poetic lyrics blend well with the instrumentation and add to the bands upbeat and fluid sound…the band’s music is polished and well structured and while some people use this term negatively (I don’t), the song is definitely radio ready.
Matthew Wood, Unformat, May, 1999
“…There's a 90's edge here that brings the sound up to date; if you like a fresh, uptempo blend to your rock, give 'em a listen..” James Esch,

“…The band shows good interplay as well with an open playing style that leaves room for extended instrumental exploration. My guess is Big Open Road is a great live band. And this leaves me wanting much more…”
Bryan Baker, Gajoob, September, 1999
