Artist History
The first notion of Unscathed first came about when two frontmen for two mediocre bands in Asheville were discussing their musical futures. May 30, 2001, Justin Smith had just gotten through performing with his band Wrought. Matt Robinson, the frontman for F.N.P., a band that had decided to go their seperate ways a few days earlier, approached Smith regarding the band. Neither frontman was happy w/their current musical status and Robinson suggested collaborating the members of the two bands who shared common musical goals. Unscathed was born June 6, 2001 with the lineup of former Wrought members Ryan Dodd on drums, Smith on lead guitar and former F.N.P. members Chris Gorglione on rhythm guitar, Troy "Fat Tony" Russell on bass and Robinson on vocals.
Late September, after a few fairly successful shows, Smith decided leave Unscathed. Early October, Gorglione brought in former co-worker Stephen Fesperman for a lead guitar tryout. Fesperman was welcomed in the band and brought with him totally new musical and writing styles. Robinson and Gorglione determined that a different rhythmic sound was needed to round out the new style. Around the end of 2001, Robinson called Russell to inform him that Gorglione would be replacing him on bass, and Fesperman would take sole care of the guitar duties.
In February, Unscathed reluctantly unveiled the beginnings of their new lineup and sound to the public. The show was very educational and revealed many kinks that needed to be worked out. After some freezing cold practices and many tripped circuits, Unscathed felt ready for their next show: An Asheville Buncombe County Youth Council sponsored Battle of the Bands. Unscathed closed out the show, a position the band had only been in one previous time. The show was a huge success. The crowd was energetic, the response was beyond belief and Unscathed ended up winning the Battle of the Bands.
Unscathed has since gained a loyal following and has been the topic of many discussions in circles of local music. Dan Martin took over lead vocalist duties and in late December, Unscathed recorded at The Basement in Winston-Salem to have a studio quality EP released. Stay tuned, as you've only seen the beginning of what Unscathed has to offer.

Who: The ABCYC Benefit Battle of the Bands
Where: Mamma T's at Rec Park
When: Friday, April 12
The Asheville-Buncombe County Youth Council's Battle of the Bands to benefit the Special Olympics combined youth-oriented music with a good cause to bring out local high-schoolers by the hundreds. Winners were chosen by the amounts of money placed by listeners in each group's donation box. Here's a brief rundown: [...]
Winner: Unscathed Out of all five performing acts, Unscathed was the only group to put on a real show: They even bothered to bring their own lighting equipment. Not perfect by any means, they were still far better than practically everyone, this reviewer included, had expected. While all their songs are firmly rooted in the heavy-metal idiom, they exhibited a good diversity in their song arrangements, including high-powered pop-styled songs, slow ballads and even a few songs with rock-anthem potential. The crowd went positively nuts for them – usually a good sign. Their prize? Three hours of recording time at Whitewater Studios. |
