Artist description Australian slide guitarist, singer/songwriter Earle Douglas’s debut album.. “While out in California”.. is a collection of 12 original blues, country blues and contemporary songs mostly in the true blues and country tradition of lost love and the emotions, thoughts and stories that go with that ever present scenario so widely drawn on for all forms of song and music. With clear influences from the great Chicago and delta players and a healthy intake of some of the more contemporary slide guitar players, particularly the likes of Ry Cooder, Sonny Landreth, Bonnie Raitt and co, the album contains a wide range of tunes from driving bar room blues to sparse laments with just an accompanying acoustic guitar. Backing on 9 of the tracks is the rhythm section of stalwart Brisbane blues band,(Buzz and the Blues Band), with Billy John Bakos on drums and Sammy Mack on bass. Gifted Brisbane blues musician Mojo Webb plays some great Chicago style harmonica on three of the tracks, with friend Tim Palmer supplying some acoustic rhythm guitar on a couple of tracks also. “ Having done that “band thing” many years ago (far more than I’d like to say) this album I guess represents a gathering of most of the different styles and forms of roots music I have been exposed to and listened to over many years. All of the songs were written on returning home from a stint living in California, hence the title. And although most of these tunes are very personal I’m very grateful for all the circumstances that evolved in me finally putting something down for real after all these years, instead of just letting them bounce around my head. I have never been that far from a guitar over all the years since I was a kid, but to start playing seriously again after all this time has been a very enlightening, fulfilling and enjoyable experience.
