Full of Lofty Ambition, Music Entrepreneur David Brown Takes Things “Day by Day.”
On November 1,2001, at Ear Wax (a local record store in Midtown Atlanta), music producer David Brown launches his CD single, “Day by Day,” a rhythmic anthem that melds the soulfulness of the familiar spiritual with a cutting-edge, postmodern message of hope. The CD, which features rapper Mastamind, a.k.a. Aleem Spencer, is Brown’s calling card for his new company, David & Goliath Productions, a grassroots music studio that provides affordable, high quality demos for up-and-coming Grammy winners.
His Daddy is a preacher, so it’s not unusual that Brown can relate to his namesake from the Bible, who defeated insurmountable odds. The Atlanta music scene is rife with major players, but hey, they all had to start somewhere. Brown has the talent, drive and faith to know that he can make it big, too. And take others up with him.
“Everybody wants to be a rapper,” the ebullient young entrepreneur asserts, sitting in his loft in midtown Atlanta. “We’re offering a $99 demo session for anyone who wants to get some attention. We’re small but we’re good.”
Brown’s music studio, in one corner of the loft where he also lives, is a compact haven of state-of-the-art equipment. His massage table occupies another corner of the space.
“Until this thing takes off,” he confides, “I’m supporting myself as a massage therapist. But I’m getting three or more music clients in here every day.”
Brown, an ex-Marine, served as writer/arranger for a thirty-piece band while he was stationed at Cherry Point, NC. That Marine band performed with such notables as B.B. King and Maurice Hines. He opened for Teddy Riley, the original rump shaker, in North Carolina in 1992. After his stint in the military, Brown freelanced for various record companies before deciding to come to Atlanta and start his own business. A native New Yorker, Brown was on hand to observe the rise of rap. His “street cred” informs his music sensibility, but he’s also schooled in classical, jazz, r&b, pop and gospel music. His influences range wide; his artistic family includes a chef, an actress, an artist, and a playwright.
“I want to focus on local talent,” he says. “It only takes one well-produced CD and the right exposure to make an amazing success story. I want to give budding superstars a chance to cut a demo in a professional, supportive, affordable environment. Even though the price is reasonable, the production values are enormous.”
