Dan Sinasac / Burnt Piano – Review by Owen Jones, Windsor Star
Dan Sinasac abandoned his Detroit-area roots over twenty-five years ago for the greener pastures of Alberta. But don't for a minute think that he's forgotten what he learned growing up across the river from the Motor City. The grit and gravel of the Detroit River remain firmly fixed in his growling singing style, the funky fingering of his bluesy keyboard work, his rollicking and rootsy approach to songwriting, indeed, the soul of what he's all about. Growing up listening to local radio that inundated us with the likes of home-town heroes Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Bob Seger, he can't help but be influenced by some of the toughest attitudes in making the soulful music that has also become his trademark.
Listen to Dan Sinasac's long-awaited musical project, Burnt Piano, and you'll also hear influences as diverse as James Brown, Joe Cocker, Tower of Power and the little-known but acclaimed jazz/rock group Dreams. If there's a common thread that all the above artists have sewn into their music, Dan Sinasac included, it's passion. Dan Sinasac has always been driven by his passion for making music, from his days as a teenager playing trumpet in southern Ontario bands like Old Brown Shoe and Peculiar Friends, to teaching himself how to play piano, to finding his own unique singing style, to writing the songs that were bursting out of his imagination, many of which comprise Burnt Piano. Give it a listen. I dare you to sit still as he and his top-notch studio band punch your lights out with one personal hit after another of funky soulful music done as only Dan Sinasac can do it. It'll make you want to testify.
