    Artist History
Addison Groove Project has been doing their funk, fusion, exploratory rock thing now for six years. The band's sound is deeply rooted in the funk/fusion era of the late 60's to early 80's; artists like Miles Davis, Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jimmy Smith, Parliament/Funkadelic, etc... However, members of the band have strong influences in classical, jazz, and rock music: Debussy, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Chopin, Bach, Sonny Stitt, Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, Cannonball Adderly, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Clifford Brown, John Coltrane, Led Zeppelin, The Talking Heads, The Beatles... Addison Groove Project synthesizes their palette of sounds to create experimental compositions that are unleashed live with raw improvisation and driving rhythms. Formed by five natives of Wellesley, MA at the end of 1996, the group had its start by barnstorming high school dances covering the JB's, Kool & the Gang, and Sugarhill Gang. In the spring of 1997, the band won the WBCN Boston High School Battle of the Bands. At that event, Brendan Mcginn (vocals, guitar, trumpet), Andrew Keith (drums), John Hall (bass), Ben Groppe (tenor saxophone), and Dave Adams (alto saxophone) met Rob Marscher (keyboards), who joined the band in May of 97. After the band's first club show at the Middle East Downstairs, December 97 (Gamelan Presents viperHouse, Pat McGee Band, Addison Groove Project, and Alaskan), AGP was quickly welcomed into the Boston 'jamband' community. In the spring of 98, the members of AGP used the studio time they had won at the battle of the bands and spent their last term of high school working on their senior project which resulted in their eponymous debut album release. In the summer of 1999, the Addison boys packed a couple generators into the van and performed two all-night surprise shows on the airstrip at the Phish concert in Oswego, NY. On Saturday afternoon, they met DJ Mister Rourke who was performing on a side stage with Bob Moses' group. The DJ made his first of many appearances with AGP at their debut appearance at the Berkshire Mountain Music Festival in the month of August. The band has frequently collaborated on stage with MC's and DJ's since then including Mister Rourke, Shuman, DJ Logic, Illin' P, Kabir, Edan, DJ Jet-C, DJ Axel Foley and Road Manager AC Chillin'. The band embarked on their first tour in the summer of 2000 as a co-bill with fellow Boston band Uncle Sammy. At the end of the year, 'Wicked Live,' the group's second album, was released before a sold-out crowd at the House of Blues in Cambridge, MA. With all members attending college all over New England and in New York state, the band continued to be weekend warriors during the school year, meeting up for shows as far wide as possible in time to get back for class on Monday. During their time off in the summer of 2001, AGP undertook their first extensive solo tour down the east coast to Florida. The following October, a sold-out crowd made its way to the Paradise Rock Club in Boston to catch the band. At the end of the year, the AGP van, 'Big Beef,' hit 200,000 miles and saxophonists Dave and Ben were invited to sit in with Maceo Parker at Irving Plaza, NYC. In the beginning of 2002, the band recorded their first studio album since 98 at Fort Apache Studios in Boston. The record was released in April 2002 to rave reviews and sold-out shows in the northeast. The new van, 'White Dragon,' was christened and in the summer, the band expanded their touring radius, returning to the southeast US and making their debut appearances in the midwest and Canada. in the fall of 2002, the band returned for their last year of life in college and recorded a new live album (Wicked Live 2) over the course of two nights at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston, MA.
