Artist History
AutoWow is made up of Antonio Cora, Matthew Rippetoe, and Joseph Romano. The three have known each other for most of their 25-year lives, and only started playing music together within the last few years, 1999 until now. Mr. Romano was working as a music seller at a bookstore, Mr. Cora a recording engineer at a recording studio, and Mr. Rippetoe was playing saxophone on cruise ships. When Mr. Rippetoe returned from the high seas in December of 1999, the three dudes met in the extremely chill basement/bedroom/homestudio of Mr. Cora, and started playing some music. Fortunately, for some, unfortunately, for others, the first meeting was immortalized on ProTools, was cut apart, mixed and mastered, and was titled AutoWow.
During the moist month of April, 2000, the three started recording more and more improvised music, and eventually put together another basement cd called Robots. The fellows were slowly developing a sound unique to themselves, and decided to start taking the band a little more seriouslier. Demos were put together, packets were sent out to local live music venues in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., rehearsals were taking place on a regular basis, but nothing happened. They played a few bars and bookstores here and there, with only free beer or gift certificates as reimbursement for their services, but kept writing and rehearsing in the womb-like comfort of the splendidly chill basement/bedroom/homestudio, losing faith in their attempts to be creative (because, who wants to listen to that anyway, right?).
Near the end of 2000, surprisingly, people were asking them for another cd. A third AutoWow cd?, asked the guys. Yes, a third, said the people. Without much money or motivation, the three still met to play periodically, but nothing was happening, and their schedules began to fill with other things.
One day, while sitting in the chill basement/bedroom/homestudio of Mr. Cora, the guys were doing what they normally did there. Talking, playing music, making fun of each others moms, and drinking beer. Then entered Mr. Eduardo Miguel Sanchez Quiros (Haxan Films), who had a proposition for the guys. He, being among the few who liked the band and had faith in them, wanted to provide them with the opportunity to record a full length cd with his money. The three graciously accepted the offer without peeing their pants, and recorded TapBox in two weeks at Studiohouse North in Capitol Heights, Maryland.
Mr. Rippetoe: This is a successful combination of musicians. We each have our individual tastes in music and have studied them quite thoroughly, and with the three of us trying to be creative cohesively, the result is great.
Mr. Cora: At the same time it poses a bit of a problem when it comes to categorizing the band. I mean, it is such a cliché thing to do… to try to be uncategorizable, but in our case, we would like some kind of niche to fall into.
Mr. Romano: The good thing is, though, is that the songs on the new cd sort of put us in a direction that might totally redirect our overall approach.
AutoWow: It is fun. It is funs. It is fundt san. Do not forget it.
