Duo bringing hip-hop to Manch
Duo Bringing Hip Hop to MANCH---------
By Larry Clow-----------------------
Manchester doesn't have a bustling hip-hop scene, but Mike Bourgeois, one half of the East Side Poets, hopes that will change following the duo's Friday, Jan. 24 show at Chantilly's.
"I think after next week, with Chantilly's being more of a known club, with WJYY promoting the show, it will bring a lot of awareness," he said.
--------------------------------------------------
The show will also feature local hip-hop artists LB and MC Skyline.
----------------------------------------------------
Bourgeois and his partner Steve Nedeau have been performing
together as the East Side Poets for three years.
"We produce and write all our own stuff," Bourgeois said. "All the
music is ours, except for any remixes we do."-----------------
Nedeau and Bourgeois, who go by the stage names "6" and "B,"
respectively, already have one CD out with another on the way
this summer. Bourgeois said their style is "hip-hop, but it kind of
has a jazzy pace to it."
--------------------------------------------------
"It's not your usual hip-hop," he said. "We do such a mixture. The
bass lines are really jazz oriented, but with a strong hip-hop drum."
---------------------------------------------------
The two met through Nedeau's wife, who was a former girlfriend
of Bourgeois. Since then, they've performed at almost every kind
of venue.
--------------------------------------------------
"We've done all kinds of shows ... performed for kindergarten
classes, clubs, free show. We opened for DJ Skribble two years
ago," Bourgeois said.-----------------------------
However, many of the East Side Poets' shows take place in
Massachusetts. Bourgeois said that there aren't many places for
underground hip-hop in New Hampshire.
----------------------------------------------------
"The problem with New Hampshire, especially with hip-hop, is a
lot of things are just dance clubs, nothing performance driven," he
said. "New Hampshire is not really a big hip-hop area."
-------------------------------------------------
Bourgeois said that it's unfortunate, because there are a growing
number of performers in New Hampshire.
"I think it's just in the beginning stages," he said.
