Artist History
Formed in 1996 while listening to “In Time” by Sly Stone, Bumpus has grown to be much more than a band that plays soulful music. While you can’t hear Bumpus without the word “funky” coming to mind, there’s something unmistakably modern and relevant in Bumpus songs. While you won’t ever see them taking themselves seriously, you’ll definitely hear honesty in their music. Bumpus writes songs, not jams, melodies, not rants. At Bumpus shows people are sure to be moving, but they’re always singing along too. Bumpus knows what it takes to put on a show. People have to go home with a memory in their head. A feeling to associate with what they’ve seen. Judging from a consistently outstanding fanbase, selling over eight thousand records independently and extremely favorable reviews in the press, that feeling is resoundingly positive. After a much deserved rest in early 2002, Bumpus began 2003 with a bang, tracking a live album before a packed house at Metro. Now that album is set for July release with extensive touring to follow. |

Press Reviews
“Like the Beatles, they’ve taken the music they’ve grown up with and loved and are turning it around into something that is truly their own and truly unique, much the way the Beatles took Little Richard and the Isley Brothers and then, eventually, wound up with Strawberry Fields…” – Terri Hemmert, WXRT-FM – Chicago
“Bumpus is poised to be one of the bands to spearhead Chicago’s well-deserved (some would say long overdue) musical renaissance.” – Paul Barille, Chicago Arts & Entertainment
“Bumpus is one of the premier bands of Chicago, with a groove so potent that it dares you to stand still.” - Richard Milne, WXRT-FM, Chicago
“Bumpus has released one of the better local albums of the past few months and will always be an incendiary live act…It’s an awful lot of fun to watch a band as it grows, challenges itself and succeeds.” – Jim Kopeny, UIC Inferno
“Bumpus revisits hallowed ground with a flexibility and playfulness that shows its influences are well-cooked and healthily digested – unlike the half-baked regurgitations of a long line of wannabes, from the Red Hot Chili Peppers on down to the Afrodisiacs.”
-Monica Kendrick, Chicago Reader
